LOL KAY ;DD

So there aren't really any threads specifically for tech crew.
Or, that are obviously for tech crew, I should say.

So, here we are, I guess...
Hiding in dark corners as usual.

Topics to discuss:
-Favorite tech jobs (general)
-Favorite tech jobs we've done in the past
-Funny tech stories
-Painful tech stories
-Tech tips
-Etc. etc.

LOL KAY ;DD

I like spot 'cause I can watch the show every night and because there's no risk of me knocking things over during the show, which I usually do when I'm backstage. D":

Questing:

With ONLY DC tokens/tickets. Help?

Same here!
Plus the catwalk in the local theatre is large enough to take naps in during intermission. ;]

I love working the boards, personally...sound and lighting. It always makes me feel like I have much power. However, if I were to choose my own backstage position, I would stage manage because I haven't yet had the opportunity to do so...and I'd like to.

Stage managing is crazy.
But yeah. I agree with you on lights and sound.
They're both pretty intense.

I'm Mostly an actress but I've worked some crews as well. I like make-up and sound crew the best. Construction crew is also fun!

I've usually just stuck to pre-show stuff- I'm far too clumbsy for stage tech and we had enough sound and light people.

I think my favourite show to do tech for was doing pre-show and make up for Cats. Despite the general dislike of it, I rather like it. Our Tugger, Grizz and Big D were amazing. Makeup was certainly an adventure. We tried to stick to the video production makeup templates but I got to create a lot for Jenni and Augustus (a lift/chorus cat). My first big leap into the world of creme make up. I pitied the guy playing Augustus, I had to put clown white in his hair every night because his wig wouldn't fit his head, though the effect was rather nice from the audience.

The year before the same people had me design and build Gaston's chair for Beauty and the Beast. That was terrifying. They just told me it had to be "big". I'm not a big fan of power tools to begin with and that set just plagued the tech from start to finish. The deer legs we glued to the chair gave one girl a concussion when they fell on her and a group of 5 techies spent 20+ hours working on that stupid fountain and bench only for it to be scrapped at the last minute. Though of all the productions of it in the area, it was easily the best (we had an amazing duo for the titles.)

I like the music of Cats.
But the costumes frightened me as a child, so... that's kind of stuck with me. D;

Haha. Yeah. Our local community troupe just did Beauty and the Beast with past winter;
moving that damn chair onstage was not fun to say the least.
We used a bridge instead of a bench... and the brakes gave out.
I think it was karma because the guy who played Gaston was a douche to the backstage crew.

;D

I apologize for the Joker edit.
I'm internet-paranoid and in love with The Dark Knight.

Our's was completely different, I used bit of deer that I stole from my brother and my director. I didn't make the legs quite even (had to rely on others to use the table and rotary saw, saws and I do not agree) so it was rather unsteady. When I sat in the audience to watch the show I just kept praying that it wouldn't come crashing down- our Gaston on was a sweatheart (he also played Big D the next year) and I'd hate to hurt him.

That production just had problems with chairs. We had to redo the beast's chair at least 5 times. It's still haunting around in the tech shop, with one leg and most of the really ugly fabric. They rarely throws out anything, still have "kilts" from doing Brigadoon at least two decades ago and Egyptian costumes from doing "Joesph" when I was in elementary school.

Once we figured out the logistics of getting a make up team of close to 20, and a cast in unitards, we were okay for Cats. Just when they gave us the male changing room to set up our mid-show touch ups that we had a problem, I could have lived without seeing Plato's naked hiney. That and we were out of grey three days into the production. I usually spent Act 1 mixing custom batches since Plato, Griz, Augustus and Gus all needed it extensively.

Yeah.
Most people go for the antler look because that's how it was in the movie.
Our tech director has a thing with bears, I think. :/

Oh, I have a nude story.
Our mic guy knew that our Belle was unashamed of anything
and ran around topless in the dressing room,
so he asked me to go get her mic one night.

I don't think I will ever forgive him for that.

I hate running out of make up!
The children's theatre recently put on Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book,
and we ran out of black and red.
My mom had to run and get some so Bagheera wouldn't look like a kitten.

I love doing stage management. It's completely crazy, and you never know what's going to happen nexzt, which I think is what I like about it so much. Plus I don't really understand lighting boards, soundboards or anything electrical, and I'm not good at drawing, so I wouldn't be so good at anything else really. I'm not too bothered if I do other jobs though, just so long as I don't get dragged into doing someone else's job halfway through the production.

For example, in February, we had someone who was meant to be miccing up people but was afraid of touching them, so would just give the microphones to the costume department. As if they didn't have enough trouble getting people in and out of harnesses. (He didn't have any trouble touching me though, he spent half the week practically sat in my lap gonk )

I don't mind making things so much though. I had to help make three wire framed Polar Bear heads earlier in the year, that wasn't so bad.

I personally like Runs Boards,
But I also like Spot lighting.

But I think Techies have the Most Fun

The lighting Crew was setting up the lights and they got board so they got the Skinnyest kid and Gaf Taped him to a Baten, And flu it out with him on it,
He was like Guys this isn't funny Let me Down

It was hella Funny

I'm with the wardrobe department currently, and we just closed Cats. One of the wardrobe policies here is that we don't leave until the actors are done in the dressing rooms... which meant waiting 30-45 minutes after the show was done so the actors could take off their makeup. I'm so glad we're on Cabaret now. They're all naked by the end of the show anyway! xp

Set Decoration.

I also had fun being Assistant Stage Manager, because my job was mainly this:
Go get this.
Go get that.
Okay, you can go help the Set Dec crew cuz they suck.
Get the mics.
Send in the ensemble on their cue.
Go hide backstage and eat.

It was great. Set Dec is my first and only love though.
