It's never to late to start doing something that you love, even if you don't make it into the professional business people who start out at age 2 don't even make it most of the time. I think you should definitely go for it. I love dance but we just can't afford to take classes and I'm scared that I would be the oldest or youngest one there but, I still think that following our dreams would turn out for the best. ninja

I totally agree with Chairgrl101. Dance is very competitive and I just started this year. I used dance when i was really little, but I don't really count that. My friends said that even though I just started, I was really good smile I bet the same will happen with you smile GO FOR IT! Dance has changed my life for the better whee

I know a woman who started ballet in her 30's. She turned out to be a fantastic dancer. It's never too late to start dancing! So long as you're willing to work hard, you'll be fine whether you start at 3 or at 50. (I've seen the 50 year old first time dancer thing happen, actually! He ended up loving it and comes to the class four times a week, and gets roles pretty regularly.)
It isn't too late to take lessons, however i'm sad to say it is too late to go professional.
You could always look in your nearby community colleges, dances classes, and YMCA programs.
I use to dance, but I broke my feet and dislocated my knee, so I'll never be able to do ballet again
crying
Anyway, I still like to watch
it is never to like to take ballet, i took ballet last year, and im turning 16 this year, and ballerinas being long and skinny is such a lie stereotype because if you read into it... ballerinas like that are very intense been doing ballet for a long time and dont eat much that way they can look like that, so dont say it like its a bad thing, ur a healthier size.
Never too late! I started at eighteen

This may not be what you want to hear but it's the truth. It's most likely too late for you to be a prima but it's not too late for you to dance.
I thought the same thing at your age. Well-- almost the same.
dont worry, its never too late to learn. i like ballet too and im really curvy but that does not stop me doing anything...if you want to do it then do!!! xd

Tell us how your getting on if you do do it! smile

I'd just like to say thank you so much for all of your help, from everybody!!
I'm not bothered about being professional, I just want to get into it, because I've always wanted to be involved with it and I like that it needs a lot of effort, yet when practised can be a very graceful sport.
Thanks again everybody - really appreciate all your input!!

No, I don't think it's ever too late to dance classes of any kind as long as you are fit to do so. I am older and I just started taking belly dance for about a year ago and had no formal training before that. I am having a lot of fun and not having a lot of problems, I am sure you would probably be fine taking ballet.

I don't think weight would be too much of a problem though it might make some stuff a bit more difficult. Thought the great thing about dance it that it can help you get into shape, lose weight and become for flexible and strength. Dance can have a lot of benefits as long as you are healthy enough to be able to dance and learn things like posture and the techniques properly.

Just practice and have fun.
It's never too late to start dancing as a hobby! Some people pick it up really quickly. Just have fun with it

However....it's probably too late to be a professional dancer. Those men and women train from VERY young ages to be where they are, so it's probably out of the question. And yes, they are usually stick-skinny but of course you don't need to be super skinny to do it for fun. I'm in a semi-professional company and I'm a normal size.
Like other people in this thread have said, dancers come in all shapes and sizes. While the ideal body is thin (since the girls are lifted up by the guys) you can still be taller and still be thin and it shouldn't be a problem. smile Good luck, and have fun if you decide to dance! smile

Don't become anorexic skinny though. A former teacher of a friend of mine told her (my friend) that she could only drink milk and had to become a vegetarian. Well, my friend left that teacher because that would be detrimental to her (and anyone's) health, especially if you're a dancer, because we burn more calories.

just like every has said here, you can start. though like someone else has said, you wont be at the level of your peers. most are starting to look into companies and on pointe. and most your age and college age want to do it as a profession. it takes alot of work to make it in the profession of dance not just with the dance part but watching your body. it sneaks into every part of your life. you cant do certain things because you might get hurt and cant dance, you have a very strict diet, and all that other stuff. someone said that ballerina's being thin and lean is a stereotype, its true. it wouldn't be a stereotype if it werent true. most principal ballerinas in some of the most famous dance companies are very thin and have worked too hard to get there. its a tough road. but if you would like to just do it as a hobby go for it. also, i am not saying you wont make it because you are on the shorter side and curvy, you would just have to work a little harder. i know plenty of shorter dancers who have a great career in ballet and dance. DO IT!
It's never too late!!

It's certainly never too late. I'm a professional hip hop dancer and I started doing ballet at the age of 21 to learn some control. It was really beneficial for me.

Hope you enjoy it! smile
