As a freshmen I teched Arabian Nights and was deck crew. I didn't do any more shows that year waited till the next year and was assistant stage manager for Chicago then was assistant stage manager for no,no, Nanette. Next I was deck crew for attack of the giant exs(a very small show attached to a group of 5 one acts so deck crew was the only tech option). Then ended last year with being a dresser for Les Misérables. So I have teched five shows and I do love teching helping the show run and all that jazz. Though I tried out twice for no,no,nanette it involved dancing and i'm pretty clumsy so that didn't work out. I tried out for attack of the giant exs was student directed so I'm sure you all know the way that one went. Les Misérables was singing and I can't sing well either. I am happy back stage I just wish I could become stage manger or will get assistant stage manger again. I tried out because I wanted to give myself a chance and now I can say I tried.

Well, as a freshman, you can't expect anything big. I've been stage managing for about five years, starting in my seventh grade year. As a freshman, I didn't stage manage really anything unless I put myself out there. All you have to really do is go up to the director of the show (before auditions since the stage manager usually runs the auditions) and ask if they have a stage manager chosen yet. That let's them know that your interested (make sure you say your interested in the position as well) and would be available if they needed one. Once you get that under your belt and stage manage a few other productions, directors should be asking you if you would like to stage manage other productions as well. Just make sure you're up for the stress and work that comes with it. :3

Ah, I see...Interesting...
Don't know how the crew selection works where you are, but if you're aiming to be in stage management, usually whoever selects the stage manager will go for someone with experience in most of the positions- after all, the SM gets to play mediator between director, actors, designers and crew and needs to know the basics of how all the fields (lighting, acting, costuming, etc.) work and what they will need schedule-wise. Since you're still in HS, I don't know what the job requirements are compared to a company or college, so take this with a grain of salt.

The more experience you have, the more likely you are to be chosen as a stage manager. Try to take tech jobs all over the place and work your way up. This will also help you get to know the people you'll be managing in the future and give them a reason to respect you.
That, and sucking up. Sad but true, theater is all about who you know. sweatdrop

Yeah iv been ASM twice, deck crew twice, and a dresser once also am in Drama 3 and will be in Drama 4 next year. Also two of the shows I teched for went to a comp and one of them we made it to state comp. So I have the experience honestly I'm just not talented at singing or dancing and he doesn't really do straight plays since he is so good at planning musicals and such.
