The old house creaked and moaned as the wind grew and the storm came closer. The fire that had been lit in the brick fire place flickered violently, as uncle, an old man that had only a few white hairs left on his head , his veins showed on his shaking hands, sat by the fire and spun ghostly tails to the children of the orphanage. “They say,” he said moving closer to the children. “The woman still screams for help from that building waiting for someone to save her.” The kids screamed then looked at each other and laughed. I stood up from the wooden chair next to the fire place and grabbed some logs that were leaning on the bricks and threw them in, watching the fire slowly engulf them. I stood and waved the children to go to bed then looked at uncle. “ I wish you would stop filling their heads with those stories, now they won't be able to sleep tonight.” I said as I walked to the door and took my coat of the hook. “ You just don't like it cause you and Mary work there.” We were silent, the only sound was the rattling windows and crackling fire. “Uncle,” I started with a blank expression. “Mary left remember, she moved with her fiance.” I hated talking about my twin sister I missed her so. “She never did tell us where she went did she?” he said as more of a statement then a question. I slowly put my coat on and placed my hand on the door knob. “ I'll be back soon. Don't forget to make sure all the candles are out in the kids' rooms.” I told uncle ,he nodded then I opened the door. A strong chilling wind blew into the house. “Maybe you shouldn't go out Claire, I have a bad feeling about tonight.” Uncle said as his hair violently danced on his head. “It's just some wind. Besides we need the money to help feed all of us.” Before he could refuse I stepped out of the door and fought it closed. I began to walk towards the town. I passed the stable and looked at the horses I was surprised to see they weren't effected by the storm but instead the just stared at me with their green eyes. I quickened my pace and soon enough made it to the cobblestone street of the town. I let out a sigh of relief. I began to try to fix my hair but was over ruled by the power of the wind. I froze for a second when I heard a raven, I turned my head in the direction of the sound. The three of them stood on top of a roof their feathers ruffled from the wind but the stood there unfazed by the storm and just stared at me with their green eyes. I started towards the bakery at a much faster pace telling myself that their eyes were black not green. I slowed when the bakery was in sight. The owner's cat laid next to the door sleeping, I smiled at it as I came closer. It opened one eye then sat up. With both of it's green eyes locked on my every movement. I hurried past him to the door. I opened it letting the smell of fresh bread to come out and mix with the wind. I pulled the door shut as I stepped in. The owner appeared from the back room already wearing his coat. When he saw me he smiled. “ Claire, I'm so glad you could do some extra work for me.” he said as he moved towards the door, he never liked staying longer then he had to. “Don't forget to take care of the ovens in the basement okay.”. He opened the door and walked out closing it behind him. I sighed took of my coat and placed it on the out wood bench by the door. I grabbed the broom that leaned against the wall and began to sweep the floor. It began to rain, the drops on the windows looking like ever flowing tears. I heard something that sounded like knocking which I dismissed as a branch hitting the wall. I also heard the wind that sounded like mumbling and screaming. As time passes the storm grew louder. I grabbed my coat when I had finished sweeping cleaning the ash from the ovens and cleaning the tables. Then I remembered that I hadn't done the ovens in the basement yet. I sighed put my coat down, grabbed a candle and headed to the basement door. As I opened the door I saw a flash of light then heard thunder I sighed, I had hoped I could get home before the lightning started. I headed down the stairs the lower I got the more the smell of dirt replaced the smell of bread. I lit the candles by the ovens when I heard a knocking again but this time I knew it wasn't the branches I walked towards the sound which led me to the shelves of flour that covered the back wall. Behind one of the shelves I saw something that looked like a door. I moved the shelves easily when I found they had wheels on them. I placed my had on the now exposed wooden door and grabbed the handle I opened it and a terrible smell flew in to room. I turned to leave but then I heard the knocking again coming from right down the stairs. I held the candle close as I descended down the stairs afraid of what I might find. The basement was large and damp, I heard the knocking again and followed the sound finding as I got closer the smell got worse. I reached a point where I could no longer stand the smell and I held out the candle to light up the area ahead of me. I gasped when the memories came flooding back I took half a step back and stared at it, the terrible version of me. The was blood on her hands where her nails would be and on her dress. long tangled hair fell over on her shoulders. She was pale and looked skeletal. When she finally spoke her voice was weak. “ You forgot about me didn't you Mary ?” I kept the candle close as I answered. “ No, Claire I didn't.” She shifted as she leaned against the wall and looked at me when she looked “ I still don't understand why you did this Mary.” As I spoke I gained my confidence. “ You know why dear sister because while you were here in this cute little town with uncle chatting and only doing part time jobs. I was stuck on the farm with our aunt doing all the work while she would only collect eggs. When I came here to visit I saw what a good life you had, I knew you would never trade lives and aunt would never let me stay here. So, you see I had to do it. ” I looked at her surprised to see her stand straight up. I took a step back. “That's all I wanted to know.” she said staring at me with those green eyes. My green eyes. I looked down to leave her gaze. Then I saw it. Her body laying there bone could be seen from the chained ankle and blood surrounded the floor beneath it. I realized quickly where the smell was coming from. I looked back up at the image of my sister that was still staring at me. “ It's alright sister, just free me from being trapped on this earth any longer.” I glanced at the chain the seemed to split at the base to attach itself to connect to both of my sister's ankles. “ I- I can not I do not have the key.” I managed to say. “No key is needed to free me.” she said still staring at me. “Just revenge.” she mumbled under her breath and with that she lunged at me and grabbed my throat. Every time I tried to scream it was masked by the boom of thunder.
