Welcome to Gaia! ::

My heart is pumping, beating, thumping,
Like it would claw its way from my chest;
My breath is steaming, ragged, screaming
Beleaguered lungs begging me for rest.

My legs are burning, cramping, churning,
Seeking sanctuary up ahead.
My ears are straining; are they gaining?
I cannot be caught, or I am dead!

The door is pricking, splintered, sticking
In a swollen frame poorly designed.
I hear them nearing, searching, jeering,
A baying pack chasing down the hind!

My fists are clenching, tugging, wrenching--
And at last the damned door opens true!
Relieved, I'm sighing, laughing, crying,
Door shut against soldiers passing through.

This is a cool poem. I like the way the first and third lines of each stanza rhyme within the line.
