You mustn't read widely enough. Sonnets are fairly common in Australian journals, at least. I write them now and then; I quite like sonnets.

I'll have to study up on modern sonnets then. I'm just saying that it's not too often you see a new sonnet, either singular or in a collection, in this modern-day period

It will be an enjoyable quest, at least. wink
Sonnets are lovely, and I'd like to see more of the old, structured poetry from back in the day instead of prose.
meh. sonnets have always been around after shakespeare, nobody has bothered to take a look at the sonnets they wrote in high school for an english or, more recently, drama/acting class. if people would do that, there'd be thousands of books full of sonnets.
stare ...or so i believe... stare
here's my traditional sonnet. I think it's ok:

a sonnet for the sake of the future

they were beaten handily
..............................given the circumstances

...............everybody's cranky today and I don't know
the National Curling Finals in Aston

too much paranoia
Young Hearts is a side quest

..............................reports of racist Peoria mob are exaggerated
..............................all weekend jesters and mummers

reading ............... the daily comics
last Tuesday's comet reentry
is it Beetle or George Bailey's the lummox?
angel pin data entry bell
.............................................Chris would be so disappointed
.............................................Forgive me CA Conrad

while they have written a single sonnet, i have yet to see any modern poets come out with a few volumes of new sonnets... at least not here in the good old U.S. of A. thus, my quest to search the planet for the next great sonnet-writer(s). or hell, i may get a good streak going, rewrite a play i originally wrote, come up with a "prequel" to Macbeth (i know of the curse, i believe in the curse, it has f___ed up my father-son relationship, but it WILL NOT take my life or my love), and become the 21st century Shakespeare

First of all, yes there are. Second of all, why are you so obsessed with sonnets? There's only so many places you can go with a single form, and sonnets are pretty played out. Third, the Macbeth curse only applies if you're in a theatre. Fourth, look not to the past to replicate their art, look forward to the future to push poetry to new heights.

why are you so obsessed with sonnets?

All nerd-rage aside, this is actually an important question. Aside from ideas about it being "played out" or the demands for variety or flexibility that have been raised, if you're dedicating yourself to a form, it'd be worth knowing and understanding that form very closely. It's shouldn't be enough to describe the sonnet's formal elements: the way the form shapes the mind, of poet and reader, is crucial.

So, why do you like sonnets?

generally, i'm obsessed with shakespeare. I merely wanted to see the response from the general gaia writing community. it seems as though nobody really cares too much for the old ways anymore.
