The high noon sun cast a warm ray straight down on the large wooden shack as a cool breeze drifted softly past the shack and to the city. The large wood building stood on the out skirts of the city, from one side, you could see grass and trees, and on the other side, the city stood strong, tall iron stacks rising into the blue sky releasing dark fog into the air. The door to the shack cracked open as Tabby's small, slender hands wrapped around the door as she pushed it open, her large green eyes scanning the tall towers of creation. This was not the sight Tabby wanted to view as she took her lunch break. Sliding along the side of the wall, Tabby made her way around the side of the shack stopping in her path as her eyes connected with the large construction site she could see in the distance, road construction. The wind began to blow again, a gentle breeze which still managed to push her waist-length hair into her face and blocking the construction from site as all she could see was the bright red strands bustling in front of her. Turning her back to the wind, she held each side of the paper lunch bag with her blackened greese smeared hands and opened it, ready to eat her banana and sandwhich she had packed for lunch, although, as the food became visible, it was a horrible surprise, her lunch had been crushed, most likely by the side door that fell over they previously had against the wall. While her work was difficult mentally, it was harder physically, all the parts of the engine were quite heavy and cumbersome, of course this would happen during her only break of the day.
Rolling her eyes, Tabby put down her lunch bag and sighed as she looked back toward the city, frantically, she began to dig into her pockets, searching for some change that would enable her to get some food for lunch, she just had to run into the city and grab a bite to eat. Hearing jingling sounds coming from her pocket, Tabby's eyes lit up, her high cheek bones dropping as her eyes popped open with excitement. Her hand grasped around the coins as she pulled them from her pockets, "Yes!" she cheered as she began to count her money, a quarter and two dimes! She could get something to eat and a ride! Throwing her back pack over her shoulder, Tabby took off at a jog down the sidewalk, making her way through the people as they began to get more and more dense the closer she got to the heart. Stopping by a light post, she lifted her hand into the air and called out to the horse and carriage passenger buggy passing by, "Excuse me! May I have a ride?"

Another morning drew to a close as the eager, young police officer James Brian, walked out from his desk in the big office building and sat at a table in the cafeteria. He sat down at a table near some secretaries, one of them being a woman, one of the only women in the entire building it seemed. He looked over to her shortly as she gave him a friendly wave, maybe too friendly. Oblivious as usually, Brian gave a nod in return and spoke as he pulled out his ham sandwich he had made at home that morning, "Ma'am." he awkwardly ran his hand through his dark red brown hair as dimples appeared due to the half hearted smile stretching across his face.
Turning back to his meal, he watched other officers in their tall navy blue hats, walk up to the lunch line, allowing food to be given to them over the counter as they paid for it. James shook his head. He was raised poor, and being poor, his parents did every little thing they could to save money, usually that saved money went to their son, Jamey, and Jamey followed their example. The frugal young man did everything he could to keep himself from spending money. Jamey was used to his nickname, he was called that by pretty much everyone who knew him. That brought him back to his childhood, running around and playing with the other Irish immigrant boys... those days were long gone. They had all gone onto follow their predestined paths at the mill or in construction while Jamey rose above... but for that, he was no longer welcome among them. He never truly missed his old friends, but he looked back on the memories with a smile, it spread across his face, delicately, his deep green, blue eyes appearing brighter as the memories danced behind them.

Mei sighed as she nearly tripped over her own feet exiting the tent she was in next to the railroad. Another infection. Her days seemed to endlessly drag on as worker after worker got hurt, leaving her with the task of healing them or helping the doctor cut off whatever was in too bad of a condition to save. Mei felt a sense of relief as she took in fresh air and was told to go take a lunch break. She wasn't sure where she should go, though she remembered there was a cafeteria where a lot of law enforcement officers ate. She decided to head that way. She didn't trust half the people mulling around, afraid they were part of a crime ring. She told herself not to be so paranoid, but it didn't always help. She headed to the cafeteria.

After getting in line for her food and paying, she sat in a clear area of a table by herself. Her cap clearly showed she was a nurse, and she felt foolish around all the people in blue hats, so she took it off and tried to evoke as little curiosity as possible. She nibbled away at her lunch, her stomach grateful for the nourishment after only having had coffee that morning. It was all she had had time for and it wasn't something she had all the time, only when she needed a pick-me-up and usually only when it was offered to her by the physician.

As the day began to heat up with the rise of the sun, Connor stopped his work for a second and wiped his forehead, looking down at his nearly gone shadow due to the sun's overbearing angle. Shaking his head at the fact that the day was barely half way through, he looked over to his brother Casey working just 4 feet away. The brothers were rarely ever apart and Connor, being older, couldn't remember life before his baby brother; it seemed like day one he was teaching him the ropes and now apparently Casey needed another lesson since he was off day dreaming, "Oy!" Connor reached over and smacked his arm to get his attention, "Stop that. You're gonna get us both in trouble eh? Remember, we're both replaceable." he waved his hand into the air, "What the hell were you even thinking about anyway?"

Casey blinked looking slightly startled as he felt his brother's hand on his arm alarm him to back into reality, "Oh... sorry." he began to break up the hard dirt beneath them again with his pick axe so they could even it out and make a foundation for a future road, "Just looking over to where Tabby works." threw done the pick axe as hard as he could, breaking up the ground.

Connor wrinkled his brow and pulled his head back slightly as he peered at Casey out of the corners of his bright green eyes his body seeming to grow tense, "Why?" he spoke in his heavy accent.

With a shrug, Casey replied, "I thought we were going out drinking tonight. Seven o'clock right?"

"Oh... yeah, that's right. Going to have another one of our famous nights?" Connor asked nudging his brother.

Casey laughed, "Like the time we got so drunk we sang ten choruses of danny boy and then you thought that horse out back was the bar tender?" He placed a hand on his brother's shoulder.

Connor shrugged, "Well they looked the same to me." The brothers both busted out in a fit of laughter until they saw the manager look over at them with a scowl. They immediately became quiet and turned away getting back to their work with the after image of their stinkerish smiles etched on their faces.

Killian watched the movement of the street from the brick archway of his building, casually lighting a cigar before discarding the match on the pavement. He didn't bother stepping on it instead letting the flame slowly die away as it found nothing more to burn. Inhaling a lungful of the sweet tobacco a crooked grin crept on his face as he watched the mill workers bustle about on the street their backs stooped as they made their way through the cobbled streets to use their pathetically short lunch breaks the best they could. A few still stood tall with their heads high, but the majority had been trodden down to the point where they no longer bother with any symbol of pride. Of course some were also just maimed beyond the point of even being able to stand straight. He took another satisfying breath before stepping out of the darkness and letting the bright sunlight wash over him.

He of course had escaped such a sad, decrepit life. Unlike the rest of these pitiful souls his family had seen how little was to be gained by following the rules of this "promised land." They'd seen the benefits - and money - to be gained by going around these road stops placed to stop good ol' Irishmen like himself from making a life in this new country. And now he was continuing their fine work and living a hell of a lot better than these suckers for it. He took another pull of his cigar not caring how it made him stand out from the folks around him. The fact that he was actually clean from soot or grease or wool fibers was enough to make him noticeable. At least he hadn't worn a suit. Today was casual business day.

Feet clattered noisly on the stones behind him, faster and louder than the shuffle of the common people around him. He grinned and brought the cigar up to his lips once again before speaking. "Oi. Took ya long enuff lad. Ye a good ol' worker, but now I don't like ta be waitin'. When I say time ta leave, now ye betta be out that door." He grinned at the young lad. He did like the lad, as much as he liked anyone anyways. And truthfully Killian didn't mind waiting but a man had to keep his workers on their toes in this business. He needed to keep them sharp and ready or they'd risk losing out to the competition, or worse, the damn police.

Jayson Hayward - Detective

Detective Hayward sat in his plush leather chair, office door closed, blinds drawn tight, desk lamp on. His fingers were wrapped tightly around a No. 2 HB pencil, tapping it against one of the numerous files strewn across his desk. He was up to his neck in paperwork - one of the many drawbacks to tracking down criminals. Hayward's eyes creased in frustration, stress lines stretching across his face as he reached for his sixth cup of coffee since he began the night before. He let the pencil fall from his fingers as he brought the ceramic mug to his lips, anxiously awaiting the warm drip of caffeine onto his tongue- it never came. Sighing, he stood, pushing the chair with much more force than he intended. The distinctive snap of wood reached his ears as he stood. "Agh, Dammit." Making his way angrily across the office floor, all Hayward could think about was getting his next cup of joe, anything to get him through the next few hours so he could meet his deadline. Jayson gripped the brass doorknob tightly squinting his eyes in preparation for the bright light that was sure to breach his cornea with the next few seconds.

Jayson made his way as quickly as possible towards the station's cafeteria, doing his best to drown out the sound of ringing phones and voices. He made his way to the coffee pot, nodding and waving politely to the cops who attempted to engage him in conversation. Warmth rose from the bottom of the cup as he filled it to the brim, a small smile spreading across his face. He took a large swig, turning around to see a lone cop sitting by himself. What was his name? Brian? Hayward thought, making his way towards him. The detective needed a break, and what better way than to get to know the cops he worked with? "Afternoon Officer Brian." Jayson said, resting his hand on the back of a chair across from the young man. "Long morning?" he asked, pulling the chair out and taking a seat.

The sun warmed the fair skin of a beautiful Irish woman as she stood outside her small one room building she called home. Despite its size and the quality of the items within, it was sturdy and had one thing she would never trade, a view of the entire city.

She rarely slept longer than five hours. There was too much to do. She had to work for her family's mistake. She did not choose the lifestyle that she lives but she was good at it. She had her looks, her confidence, and her skill but she lacked the money she knew was needed to succeed in this new world.

The world was changing. New things were being invented and she couldn't help but wonder if the social statuses would ever change. Her current occupation pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable. She couldn't care. This world destroyed her family and she vowed to destroy it.

A soft smirk crossed over her beautiful lips. It was time to go to town. Every day provided something new for her whether good or bad. She moved her slender body over the roof top and to the edge where she descended down until she was on the street. Quietly, she moved through the dirty streets where people were already busy at work. Her job was never the same and today she was curious as to what would present itself to her.

Ziyi awoke early that morning with her hair tied back in a tight bun. She slept like this so as to avoid having to bathe everyday, that would grow costly for her. She sat up from her bed and walked over to her small vanity that was in her room. She smiled at her appearance, she always seemed to have a rather clear skinned face. Zi sighed softly and stood up from the vanity and walked over to her wardrobe where she pulled out a plain looking dress. It was fitted at the waist to show off her hourglass figure, when tightened of course.

Zi was born in America and raised there, but her Grandparents were not; they were born in China. They moved here towards their later years and gave birth to Zi mom. Her mother met her father in America, but he was in the same position as her mother was, parents moved from China to America for a better life and gave birth to him there. Therefore, Zi is pure Chinese, although, she does speak American fluently as well as Chinese. Since Zi has been in America since shew as born, she just sort of took on the American fashion. She still wears Chinese clothes every now and then, but it's typically American.

Today, Ziyi would be wearing a light blue dress with her hair tied back on the sides, just to keep it out of her face. She then pulled on her stockings, which were white and a pair of black heels. She then walked out of her room, after concealing her face with the typical powder the American's used and some bright red lip color. After covering her head with a hat, she walked out of her house, locking it behind her. Being as he restaurant wasn't too far away, Zi just walked there. Once she reached her restaurant, she waved good morning to those passing by her and then unlocked the door to the building. She walked inside, closing the door behind her and walked towards the kitchen. She hung her hat up on the way and set her light blue gloves with the hat. She then pulled on an apron, so as not to ruin her dress and began brewing some coffee, a disgusting American drink, which she didn't like and some tea.

                                      Ailee Merigold!!

The sun hit her sunkissed face, but Ailee was not having it. Turning her body to the other side, she slammed her pillow on top of her head to buy herself at least those five minutes of sleep that she craved for so much. Last night was great, but it left a nasty headache. This was not going to be her day, was it?

With a loud groan, the pillow was tossed onto the wooden floor; frizzy red locks were brushed back while green orbs scanned the room that was just begging to get cleaned, but as always Ailee wasn’t having any of that. Another loud groan and she was finally up on her butt with her elbows on the blanket, chin comfortably resting in the palms of her hands. She should get up right about now, or she would have to do everything in a hurry which she knew that it never ended well. Shrug of her own shoulders was enough to convince her that this time it might be different even if she had few more minutes of intimate time with her pillow.

                                Wrong, oh so wrong.

Ten minutes later, as every morning Ailee was running around doing the same old: brushing her teeth, gathering up her creased dress, squeezing on the corset, sliding on her pretty brown shoes and running out the door, grabbing a peace of buttered bread on the way. A loud “Morning!” was all any of either the family members and/or servants got from her, as she zoomed down the corridors of the house and out the door to the nearby restaurant that she worked at as a part-timer.

Never late. Ailee always came in just in time to take off her hat, tie her frizzy locks into a messy bun at the back of her head and start her work immediately. It was always the same, forced smile on her face fallowed by taking the jackets and other belonging for a more comfortable experience in the restaurant. Being a greeting lady wasn’t that bad, at least she didn’t get treated like some of the waitresses did, but it hurt her cheeks from constantly smiling.

Letting out a loud sigh, she placed the tips of her fingers on her cheeks and pushed them up, moving them in circular motions, making all sorts of funny faces before another customer came in. It was same old Michael, their very old neighbour. With this time a very honest smile, she greeted him with a loud morning and took the jacket off him.

“Your mother was in the garden.” He mumbled as she went down to peck him on the cheek, but her lips didn’t even touch the wrinkly, stretched out skin.

Her sticks instead of arms dropped down alongside her body, shaking her head. “Unbelievable, it wasn’t even half an hour since I came here.” She hissed, to herself with a rather concerned expression. It was never good for her mother to get out of her bedroom, let alone walk around in the garden. Shaking her head a little, she snapped herself back into the reality as she nodded a little to the older man. “Thank you.” She mimicked with her lips as he walked away, placing his jacket among all the others. The smile was gone as soon as it appeared, wrapping her arms around the thin waist as she stood against the wall in the corner, her thoughts drifting off with concern all over her face as the next two clients walked by unnoticed.

Taking the first bite of his sandwich, a smile spread across Jamey's face as he liked the mayo from the corner of his lip. It was... odd tasting... perhaps going bad? Why was it that eggs went bad so quickly, he really did enjoy the eggs. They were the little protein that gave him a boost to get through the long days with heavy case work. He didn't even notice his hunger for at least five hours. Looking up into the sky, Jamey breathed in a deep breath, holding it for a second, closing his eyes softly as he let the stress of the work slide out and down his body as he separated himself. This was how he continued to do nothing but work in the presence of death, only to snap back to reality when he heard a familiar voice.
The head detective was standing next to him, greeting him, remembering his name. Excitement rushed through Jamey's veins as he immediately scooted over to make room, his eager blue/green eyes mirroring the detective's image. Detective Hayward was his idol. He wanted to one day be standing in his shoes. Jamey cleared his throat and replied to his question, "A bit, how about you, Sir? I awoke early this morning to tie up some loose ends on our last case..." he put down his sand which and began to root in his bag for something he could actually eat. He pulled out an apple and took a bite, "I read an interesting article about the case in England though, I bet those guys aren't getting any sleep." he referred to the detectives in England.

Tabby went to step into the cab when the man held a hand up in her face,
"Sorry little lady." he spoke in a grumble of a voice, "It's a policy that this taxi service is Irish free. I can tell who yous is what with the hair and freckles."
Tabby raised her eyebrows, her eyes widening in shock as she looked away from him to curse under her breath, anger rising in her gut as she wanted to jump up into the cab and push his fat hind quarters out, but instead she knew a much more effective strategy, "Please... I only have a short break... I'm so hungry. I haven't even gotten to eat this week." she lowered her head, "See, I'm the only one left of me family and I was... really looking forward to a hot meal. So if you take me to a restaurant, Sir. That would mean so much, here." She pulled the quarter out of her pocket and handed it to him with a subtle but visible expression of neglect and pain.
The man turned away for a second sighing and shaking his head. Quickly, he reached out and grabbed the quarter and jerked his thumb backwards pointing to the seat behind him, "Get in."
Tabby grinned brightly as she hopped in the back, a youthful, childlike grin on her face holding her hands together jovially. The horse began to trot and they were on their way. After a few blocks, the cab stopped in front of a Chinese restaurant and the man spoke,
"Here you go, Lil' Miss. I don't know if you potato scrubs are in to Chinese but I like it."
Tabby paused, taking in a deep breath controlling her temper, bottling it down inside her so that she wouldn't cause a scene. As the man turned around to look at her for a reply, she grinned brightly and fakely, "Thank you, I'm sure it'll be delicious."
Entering the bar, the young red head looked around nervously, "O'Holy Shite." she placed a hand on chest and drew in a breath, "Mother Mary I can't afford this place." She waited for the host to come and seat her, "I feel a hole formin' down in the pit of me wallet."

The sun finally moved past high noon as the afternoon came into being. Pulling out his pocket watch, a smile come to Connor's face as he saw the time was nearly one in the afternoon. He internally cheered that now only five hours were left in his day... that was, unless they added more. Connor wrinkled his brow slightly as he put his pocket watch away thinking, 'They better not, not today. I want to go drink and unwind with the guys and Tabby.'

"Heads up!"

Before the words were even completely out of the young black man's mouth, Connor turned to see the source of the sudden shout and make out the words when a metal beam that had slipped from their hands swung and connected with his forehead. Immediately ducking and grabbing onto the spot where the beam connected, Connor cursed loudly, shouting an obscenity as he turned to look at his good friend who had tried but failed to give him a timely warning, "Ah... Bloody... Come on, Nat!"

"Sorry Sorry! I tried, brother." Nat approached his friend, placing a hand on his back, "You alright? Lemme see."

Connor removed his hand and Nat watched the blood trickle in one stream down his face, while it wasn't gushing it was still obvious and still sliding down in droplets, a small pool of blood on Connor's hand where he had covered up the wound.

Casey made his way over as well as some other workers, to observe the scene, "Connor! Are you alright?" he grabbed his older brother's shoulder, squeezing it slightly.

"I'm fine." Connor sighed wiping at the blood with his forearm from his face. The manager ran over and looked at Connor's wound, scowling he said,

"Just a scratch. Get back to work everyone now!" he blew on his metal whistle which hung from his neck.

"But, Sir, he's injured, bleeding from the head. Isn't that a hazard to all the other workers?" Nat called out.

"He has a cut, he's not dying at my feet." he growled in frustration.

Connor picked up his pick axe and began to continue, ignoring the pain as continuing to wipe the blood with the trickling down blood with his forearm. Once the manager had gone, Nat snuck over to Connor and spoke in a hushed tone from behind,

"Give me your axe and go to the nurse. I'll cover. Don't want that gettin infected now."

"Raibh maith." Connor spoke quickly giving him the axe and making his way to the nurse's tent. Once there, he cautiously entered looking around for someone, "Hello?" he called softly in his thick Irish accent.

((Mei was in the cafeteria but I recant my last post for the sake of moving the rp along and having interaction with other characters. lol)) Mei looked up from her meager sandwich she had bought from the cafeteria and brought back to her tent. There appeared to be a seemingly attractive young Irishman with blood oozing from a cut on his head. She stood and wiped her hands off on her napkin.
"Why, hello. Do come sit down. That cut looks nasty." she said. Mei gathered some bandages and suture supplies in case it needed a couple stitches. "Please state your name and age for my records, in case we need you to follow up with the physician or myself again." she said quietly as she pulled out a clipboard with a log sheet on it. As she studied the man, waiting for him to reply, she felt a twinge of sadness. He looked so young and lively. She felt bad that he had to waste his life slaving away here in mines and dangerous environments. She gave him a sheepish smile. It was very small and turned up only the corners of her mouth, not quite reaching her eyes. She hoped he hadn't thought she was staring at him.

Annette Adolphine von Stein
Railroad Tycoon's Daughter

Annette was reading a book in the family's sitting room. Her mother was out to do some of the social calls she does and her father and brother were out doing business things. She never really fully know what they were doing but she had some sort of idea. Her father wasn't a stupid man. He prepared Maximilian fully for things to take over the business but he kept her in the general loop in things. In case anything was to come to Maximilian, he expected her to do so until whatever husband could possibly step in. Annette wasn't too worried on things though. She knew the family was relatively safe against things but she knew her father rather be safe than sorry.

Annette looked over at the time and decided it was time for her to go for a nice stroll in the park. She got up and a maid asked if she was going to do her daily stroll. She replied back that she was and the maid fetched the things necessary for the stroll. Not too long later, Annette left the house with a maid not trailing to far behind. It didn't take too long for them to get to the park and start to enjoy the stroll. She thought of going to the opera later with a suitor. She was getting old and needed to marry soon before she won't be wed at all. She hope this one will go well, unlike the last few ones.

Startled and taken aback by the nurse's sudden jump to action, Connor slowly began to approach, a worried look on his face as he sat in the chair she motioned him toward, still trying to make sense of what was happening. Then it clicked, he was in big trouble, they were mocking him, acting like his wound was a big deal, "Is this some kind of joke?" he asked with an entertained smile stretched across his face, two smile lines appearing, accenting his features, one on each corner of his curled lips.

The young woman was so friendly though, and seemed so happy to help, genuinely concerned for him, there was no way she was though; Connor was just an immigrant like any other, just a potato scum that was easily replaced, that's how this world viewed him. He licked his bottom lip quickly tasting the blood from the head wound that had trickled down before replying with a suspicious but sadistically amused tone, "Why do you want my name? And a follow up? Physician? I've never seen a physician in all my life. No nurse has ever taken that much interest in an immigrant hurt on the job, I've come to realize health care for my people is to just slap a gauze pad on it and put 'em back to work." his frustration suddenly stopped as he realized she wasn't playing a joke on him and she was kind of... eying him.

Raising his eyebrows ever so slightly in response to this discovery he decided it was best to patch things up before she got any ideas of him being a total a*****e which he was a little of an a*****e, Tabby made sure he knew that quite frequently, "I'm sorry... you must be new." he gave a bright smile and a slight chuckle, as he lifted a dirtied hand and rubbed the back of his head. Connor was known for being the ladies man of the group, he blinked his bright, forest green eyes, his thick, black lashes fluttering slightly as he now acted embarrassed. He looked at the cute young nurse and replied with his name and date of birth, "Connor Foley, December 1, 1865." he looked into her eyes as if also asking her name in return.
