So far, I've seen one plausible answer. I've also accepted, "Plot convenience."
Too bad we never got a concrete answer. Because unless that gets explained better, we have nothing else to go on.

I have a question that's been bothering me for some time. Back when Pain killed Kakashi, he met his father by a campfire and had a long father and son talk. Sakumo said that he's been waiting for a long time, or something along the likes of that.

When Obito died, he met Rin and Rin said that she's been watching him.

Basically when you die in the Naruto universe, you stay alive alone in a dismal place. Oh, and you don't really stay dead forever. Someone's bound to summon you into battle at some point in life death.
