They are there they just got pushed to background happens alot characters disappearing and reappearing in this series (like Kakashi and Obito at this moment)

He disappeared into obscurity because Gai and Naruto collectively ruined any potential character development he had waiting for him.

In Gai's defense he really, really tried to die. But just like every other character that really really tried to die Naruto jumped in and ******** it up for them.
