I think if it fits the character, let them cuss. However, if you're writing a children's or young adult book, you may want to find a more creative way to deal with it, such as "She swore under her breath" or "He let out a string of profanities."

I dig reading some cussing in novels.

The word choice is important though.

I hate reading novels where the more harsh words are thrown around casually (obviously for shock value), but I love it when a character gets themselves into a situation and reacts the way everyone would, with a resounding, "I'm ********."

That being said, if you're looking for a good middle ground, using minced oaths is always great.

I don't treat it as a big deal. If it makes sense for the characters to swear, they swear. I just see it as realism. In the world, people's language isn't always pristine.
