I'm very late...meh
But I'm pretty sure I'm going to finish this
However, i'm stuck between having the story to be a fantasy story or a realistic story...
I like realistic stories, but I feel like Ii'm going to have to research a lot.

OK. If you like realism, do that.
But, you don't have to worry about research out of the gate.
See, I'm writing about emotions and primal therapy. I do the research as I go.

For NaNoWriMo I'd suggest fantasy. You'll crank up the word count a lot faster if you can make up all the facts off the top of your head. Then again, that decision's up to you and what you'll enjoy writing more. :
