your solution was "figure it out yourself"

not helpful. its not about saying "do this thing and you'll sound amazing." its about "i dont know for sure but hey try this maybe, or this, find what ever floats your boat."

basically still "figure it out yourself" but at least point in a general direction.

Because it's the quickest solution with the best results.
******** around until you figure out a way to make it work. What the ******** is so hard about that?
I usually find having two guitars in a band is hard to play around since they're both trying to stand out. So usually it ends up just sounding like distorted noise. I think you really need to know what you're both playing and learn to highlight the other. So when the rhythm is doing his thing try to just add small simple things on top of it. Sometimes less is more, even just two notes together can sound amazing over a decent rhythm.

But as Skumskill has stated, it's best to work things out yourself. Get some teamwork going and try to get two different riffs that work amazingly together. And try make them have the same emotion that the vocals are going for. Having a happy riff usually doesn't go well with a song about death. So just try things out until something sounds just right.

dramallama i just realized im arguing with a troll

The lead player in my band has the guitar set clean and plays the melody quieter than he has his guitar set during solos, etc. Then I (rhythm) play chords and riffs with slight overdrive, to create contrast between the two guitars. It's a process that works well, and many bands use this method. Overall, if it doesn't add to the song, just stand back and have a drink, nod your head and ready yourself for choruses, solos, etc.

be a bad a** and add a counter point to the vocal melody
Just make some sort of repetitive catchy period over and over a couple times and points where it fits.
Thank you guys very much, this is all advice that can help me with this problem. I'll tweak any of these tips if I need to next practice, I'm sure my band and I can get it straightened out. Thanks again.

We play rock, nothing metal or anything. We're inspired by bands like Led Zep, Oasis, Wolfmother, etc.

You could, like, hit the top of the guitar lightly with your fist in time to the beat. And kind of wait around not-awkwardly.

Rock is kind of a freestyle section, so sitting back and letting the vocalist have their spotlight makes you look more agreeable.
