I don't play a string instrument, but this really really really bugs me. People just can't seem to get that there is a difference between a Bass and a Cello!!!! Even my band director who is extremely musically talented doesn't get it!! My cousin played cello and just by looking at the two I could tell there was a difference. I've also heard people get a viola and violin confused. Gawd, get your instruments right!!!

Viola and violin I can understand, but cello and bass... that's like some retard calling a contrabass sax a baritone sax.

I know!! Its insane. Most of the time I tell people if they want to know the difference the basic way is to stand it up. There are many more difference but the size is just.... obvious!!!
If you don't have the two instruments or any objects to compare size with, mixing up any orchestral string instruments is easy, but if there is something to compare to for scale...

Now imagine this:

You came out of rehearsal and wanted to get some dinner. Since there's no place for you to hold your violin, you bring it with you. A stranger stops by and tells you:

"WOW, YOU'RE AWESOME! YOU PLAY FOR THE BAND HERE? WHAT INSTRUMENT?"

"Uh.. .It's the violin actually-"

"SO YOU PLAY FOR THE BAND HERE?"

I hate when my stand partner stabs me with there bow, when i cant see the conducter. OOOHH... the scariest thing is when it's the concert and you put your music in protective plastic and the stage lights glare off of it and you can't see.

I also hate first violins who think they are better than everyone else....bass players too. that is a tad bit annoying.


i hate not having rosin when you need it... ummm sightreading hard music.... that's all i can think of right now.

I agree with the whole cello bass thing but it is inexcusable for a fellow orchestra member to not know the difference between a violin and a viola. I play both and it annoys me incredibly.

I find it annoying when your conducter says "Oh, you're going to be in 1st violins this year!" or "You will get a solo...just be patient." and of course it never happens.
I also hate it when your conductor picks music that is sooooooo easy.
Another thing I hate is when the second violins don't really play...it's just the first three stands that are playing... (which I know by experience..I'm in the first stand 2nd violins)

Ugh.. See, I wish my school had an orchestra, but nobody takes it past the 3rd grade here. It's probably the age that they try to start us off at, but I tried to learn Cello and within a year that fatman didn't teach me a damn thing. emo So I quit. And it's not like I could try to pick it up again because [besides my lack of time] I can't afford lessons and my school's band director doesn't know a damn thing about strings.

So our school hasn't had an orchestra since the 80's...
Just a Band, which I am in [pit percussion!].

And as for the marching violin, I only have this to say: eek Damn.

When you have to lug you AND your friends cello up some narrow a** stairs
Playing your cello old school style (without the tail spike) and you have to use your thighs to hold it up.
