I havent seen a thread for bass enthusiasts, so I thought I would try my luck at making one. Discuss your influences, your bass, effects you use (or would like), amp, your set-up, style of music you like to play, etc. Ill try and keep changing up the poll, and updating regularly. Thinking of holding a picture contest ever once in awhile. Ideas and suggestions are always welcome!

Also, beginners feel free to ask questions here, this forum isnt just for the experienced, also here to encourage and help beginners.

To answer the poll, I've been known to play both ways, so I should have voted "Doen't Matter" because it really doesn't to me, but the majority of my bass-playing is done with fingers. If the song really calls for a pick, I'll use a pick.

Influences: Well, I learn from them all, but the two I think of most are Paul McCartney (The Beatles/Wings/solo) and Steve Harris (Iron Maiden). By listening to The Beatles I was introduced to bass stylings from just about every genre of music.
My Basses: First Act cheapo bass but still gets the job done; Fender Jazz Bass
Effects: I don't use effects in my music very often with bass...most of it is done with keyboard/synthesizer
Amp: First Act and Fender. They came with the basses, no need to change them.
Style of Music: Anything from blues to metal to experimental stuff. Most of the music I've writen has a folk rock feel to it.

First Act makes surprisingly decent equipment. I bought one of there little bass amps to practice on, and it works good. My cousin bought one of there basses, i couldnt find anything wrong with it, sounded nice.

I agree. neutral

Bassists Kick. ;D

I go back and forth too. I just know a few bassists that think that if you dont play with your fingers, your not any good.

I agree. It doesn't matter which one you play with, just which sounds better to you.

I personally prefer fingers over picking because you can get a cleaner sound out of it. Plus, I can finger faster than I can pick, so it helps out a little bit when I have to play something faster. Does anyone know a good way to finger with your 3rd finger? I'm trying to learn how to do that right now. Anywho, I have a basic Fender Squier bass, nothing really special. I'm saving up for a Fender jazz bass, though. I'm also saving up for a Fender Rumble amp, thought that's going to take a while. Sorry for the really long post, I was just summarizing a bunch of things.

Using your ring finger right? Just start slow, and start trying to build up speed while using all three to roll across the string. I can play pretty fast like this now, and ive been trying to get my pinky to get in on the action, but im having a bit more trouble with that lol.

I think ive seen a web page about this, with good tips, ill look it up for ya.

Dont worry about the long post.

Here ya go

Using all your fingers - It shows how to use all 5 fingers on your plucking hand, but you can get the tips for just your ring there too.

No matter what happens along the way...

Hmm...I never could decide on a certain playing style.

In these past years I always used the style that the genre called for. In my school band I use my fingers. Most things we play are older classics and things like Also Sprach Zathursta, therefore a pick would sound like crap.

I also like playing a few metal things, such as Lamb of God and All That Remains, so sometimes a pick is required to get the right tone.

Slap and pop is also a common one for me. I'm into funk because that's where all the bass skill is at. To further my skill, I tend to learn slap techniques.

But I love bass, it's a major part of my life. If any of you EVER want to talk bass or something, PM me or IM me, my messengers are in the box above my avi.

...I'll always be that one person you can fall back on.

Feel free to keep stopping by here too man. Imma try and keep this thing going, new polls and what not. Plus you may be able to help some beginners.

Seems that everyone who has posted so far is your all around bassist, and not close minded like a few ive met here and there, and thats a really good thing.

I try and play as many styles, and learn as much as I can when I can. Right now im working on some songs for a project i got going. A Bass and Drum band, like DFA, lightning bolt etc. But with a blues, 60's -70's soul, and rock type sound.

Hell yeah, man. No real bassist is narrow-minded enough to use a single style. I'll gladly help keep this thread alive. ^.^

And if any bass n00bs need help, PM me or IM me, I'll gladly answer any question you have. ^.^
My knowledge isn't only skill, I can also give you helpful information on quality and prices if you're looking for new gear.

There's actually a song I used to gain that technique.
Listen to 'Welcome Home' by Coheed and Cambria.

The song itself is pretty cool, and try playing the verses with 3 fingers. It's a simple verse, so it's good to concentrate on your fingerpicking.

Hope I helped.
