Ah, yes, they are. I play trombone and euphonium. Not sure what my lowest note of euphonium is, but on trombone it's B(flat) 2

I is jealous

I was under the impression that C4 was middle C and A4 was 440hz.

I didn't catch the first half of the conversation, but 440hz is concert pitch aka A4

The bigger, the better. As a rule of thumb, if it can't play a concert-pitch D2 in its most common configuration, it's not big. (I chose D2 to exclude normal guitars, tenor trombones and baritone horns)

Mention your experiences with these instruments, if they're fun, or other things.

I play piano, bass clarinet and baritone sax. Eventually want to play octocontrabass clarinet and contrabass sax.

No, the most common clarinet is the soprano clarinet, which can play down to a D3 (where C4 is middle C and A4 is 440hz), and the bass clarinet can usually play down to C#2. Contrabass clarinets, due to their lack of the clarinet low Eb extension, can play down to D1.

I play bass clarinet.

While I love the sound and the way it plays, I ******** hate playing bass. I love the deep smooth tone, love that it's like the beef instrument. I love playing jazz on it. Love hearing the vibrato. And I how it can over take but then how it's able to blend in with other instruments, but I ******** hate the damn size.

I especially hate the people that make me walk half a mile up a damn hill when I don't have a wheeled case. Ugh. That was horrible. I remember seeing these really snobby violinists laughing at me. That and having a 40 pound keyboard is kind of a pain to lug around.

I'm tiny. I have sticks for arms. I get looks all the time for carrying my bass around town and that stupid joke, "That things bigger than you!" YEAH. I KNOW.

I know it can be an annoyance, but it's worth it. That or you could always pick up a fretless electric with flatwound strings... but it's not the same.

I've played Alto/Tenor/Baritone sax, and I'm probably going to start marching Baritone sax next year because after graduation, we won't have another Sousa player for two or three years. The Baritone sax I currently play isn't actually that heavy, but the case is beastly!
