GAHHHH does anyone else get spliters on your tonge?!?!
...what brand do you use?
The only reed I've used that ever splintered was a Rico Classic. Once I split a Vandoren down the middle when my tooth hit it in the upper altissimo register... but reeds for me usually only break if I subject them to several weeks of abuse... which is why I ask what brand..

mallets are much worse... trust me... but i used to play clarinet... don't get the flavored ones, they work butter as a tooth pick... and that says alot..
Flavored? ....I can't think of anything to say to that. If one's first priority in selecting a reed is taste... they need to find a different instrument. Pronto.
Quick reed selection FAQ, just to cure some of these....
Buying good reeds often goes past namebrands, (allthough I'm a sucker for VanDorens)
Make sure you hand pick your reeds from the pack when buying,
here's what to look for:
1) Examine the top of the reed, check the cut arch: It should be centered, and stretch evenly up the sides.
2) Examine the underside of the reed, run a finger from back to front, It should be smooth, and not feel splintered, or like the woodgrain.
3) Finally examine the edge of the side and tip of the reed for deformations. If it seems warped, tilted at the tip, or inappropriate thickness for the reed size, get a different one... If several in the box have wavy tips, it may be a side effect of bad shipping (fluctuating between hot and cold) which will deform them with playing.. consider a different box.
As for brand, For clarinets and saxes, I'd go with rico royal for marching season, and VanDoren for concert.
