went to an open mike night in a san francisco coffee house... The song was all about how everyone is selfish and that the world is being killed by people and we're destroying ourselves with war and how everything makes sense to him now.

As far as my understanding of it, Rock is the general term for most rock genres while Rock and Roll is a specific genre of music that even though it still fits in the rock category, is not interchangeable with other rock forms like hard rock, soft rock, punk rock, psychedelic and acid rock, what have you. It's sort of like how christianity is the general term for christ based religions and Catholic, Protestant, etc.

I know of math rock but I'm not very familiar with it in general... I'm begining to consider just making this thread cover rock as a whole since rock and roll isn't really as relevant as a genre by itself beyond referencing it as "Inspiration" for something.
