Yeah, I've sort of noticed Spiritual Cramp as different from most other Goth-Rock/Deathrock songs because of the high amounts of rhythm guitar. It's a bit weird but I think I like it more than a lot of other Christian Death songs because of it, even if it still isn't my favorite.

Oh, I love it, but I like a lot of hard rock too.

Unrelated: Is Gaiman on record saying that Robert Smith, Bowie, and Peter Murphy were inspirations for Dream's human form? The Wikipedia article seems to think that they were.

Having read the entire series myself, I'm pretty damn positive that Morpheus' is based on Gaiman himself. In fact, in volume two of the Sandman, Gaiman uses a doctored photograph of himself to represent Morpheus in Rose's dream sequence.

But you can still also tell the influnces that other people have on the character, primarily people in Goth-Rock history.

True, very true. Morpheus' face looks very much modelled after Bowie or Murphy, and his hair much like that of the classic 80's goth tease.

Same can be said of Death, who (visually) has clear influence from Siouxsie Sioux, Nico, and Dinah Cancer.

NO offense, really, but you are getting kinda off-topic. I just don't want the thread to be chatterboxed. :F

Sorry.

But erm... what is Sandman? rofl

"Sandman" was an influential comic series running nearly a decade through the 90's. The comic followed Morpheus (the personfication of dreams) as he attempted to rebuild his kingdom after being captured for seventy years by occultists in the 1920's. The comic also commonly followed Dream's disfunctional family (Himself, Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Destruction, and Delirium), as well as many human (some even real people) touched by Dream's good will.

The comic was extremely well reviewed for its constantly shifting (and absolutely gorgeus) art style, brilliant writing, philosophical insight, and cultural examination. It was one of the major "art comics" of the 90's which established the medium as a legitimate form of storytelling.

The comic is of common discussion by goths for multiple reasons. Largely, the comic was a large supporter and defender of the goth community. It featured multiple goth characters, various forms of goth fashion, and multiple direct and indirect references to goth bands. The comic also, quite notably, depicted goths in many different lights, rather than as a single archetype.

I can empathize with your fears of being chatterboxed, but the discussion did come out of a goth-rock tangent.

The character of Morpheus (dream) is visually based on Gaiman (the author), Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), David Bowie, and Robert Smith (the Cure). Other characters based on goth-rock icons include (but are not limited to) Death (primarily based on Siouxsie Sioux) and the Corinthian (allegedly based on Andrew Eldritch of the Sisters of Mercy).
sandman sounds fantastic! i would've loved to read it.
... does that make Andy a gay serial killer? gonk
I'm sorry then, Gil. sweatdrop

And, yeah, I really would like to buy it too. Lately I've really been liking comics. I just hate superheros, so it can be difficult finding good ones for me. :F

I think I might want to make comics some day.

Or animations with goth rock. XD

Well Sandman, in my opinion is by far the best comic around. It takes the essence of the Gothic subculture and smashes it into comics which makes it absolutely brilliant. Sandman is definitely something that most Goth lovers should read. :squee:
