I dunno, Pop music seems more of a marketing gimmick than a musical genre.

Grab a simple enough theme to relate to as wide an audience as possible.
Add a catchy beat and lyrics sung by a charismatic performer.
Throw in some glitz and glitter and bam, hit single.

Now, don't get me wrong, pop music isn't all bad, and I listen to a bit of it myself, but alas, I still don't feel like packaging cheap ideas in shiny music and shipping it out for maximum profits has much integrity or standing as an art form. (I get that companies need to make money, but I feel that pop music is like mass producing a bunch of cheap products as opposed to dedicating time into a really refined outcome. It seems to be putting profits before actual music, imo.)

You evidently are listening to the wrong pop

Elaborate, dude.

You're making a generalization about an entire genre based on a few shitty artists
Look these up

"Mike Alway's Diary"--Kahimi Karie
"Walk in the Park"--Beach House
"Comeback Kid"--Sleigh Bells
"Bird"--U
"Polyrhythm"--Perfume

"Silhouettes"--Swimming With Dolphins
"OG"--Religious Girls

i dunno dude those two examples pretty much completely fit his criteria (though of course U never has had massive success, considering her demographic is otaku)

also the fact that you're trying to act like incredibly popular bands aren't as qualified as lesser knowns or something (though you did have perfume on your list, which is doubly confusing) is a little troubling

Also I'm not saying popularity=/=qualification, I just tend not to like them as much so no need to list them

I'm not entirely sure what his criteria are
I assume he's talking about Ke$ha and Katy Perry and all that

his criteria:

actually that applies to Sleigh Bells, too

Sleigh Bells isn't glittery
That Perfume song counts 'cause there were some weird time signatures but w/e

Confession: I'm finally starting to warm up to Lana Del Rey. Not completely, though.

In late 2010, MEG left her label over at Universal Music Japan and signed over to unBORDE (under Warner Music Japan). She then announced her hiatus after releasing her best album "BEST FLIGHT," and then started living between Tokyo and Paris. Later on, in 2011, she released 7 digital singles throughout the course of 6 months exclusively on iTunes France, all of which are covers of popular Japanese and French songs.

Now, MEG marks her official comeback to Japan's music scene! With her new cover album titled "LA JAPONAISE" (French for The Japanese in female form). The album will include 4 new songs, and 6 of the previously released iTunes France digital singles. The album will include covers from popular songs in Japan from animated works, such as Rouge no Dengon (Kiki's Delivery Service), Motteke! Sailor Fuku (LUCKY STAR), DISCOTHEQUE (Rosario+Vampire), and others from anime such as One Piece, Naruto, and City Hunter. It will include several producers such as Nakata Yasutaka, The Shanghai Restoration Project, the telephones, THE LOWBROWS, and more.
Nakata isn't the main producer on this album cry

alas, he's not.
Well it is a cover album and Nakata isn't really needed for that.

NaNaNa is strange and disturbing all the way through.

I wouldn't consider that strange, really. I was thinking more of "Mirrorcle World", "GUILTY", or "BRILLANTE". Those aren't standard-sounding pop songs.
