it's actually much more satisfying when people don't site Rise Against as a hardcore band, Comichrist as an industrial band, or Green Day as a pop-punk band. it makes the world seem a little brighter, if only for a moment.

I know someone into European goth metal/viking metal/symphonic stuff.

Goth wise I strictly prefer ACTUAL goth rock like The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Death In June, Christian Death, etc.

Yes, but now there are no longer goth bands. And anyone trying to emulate or be influenced by dark post punk like Siouxsie and the Banshees or Joy Division just gets called an indie rock band. Theres a zillion Joy Division influenced bands popular these days
