Why do people like shows based around vain drama

because it takes people's minds off of their problems and allows them to focus on other's problems so that they can compare their problems to the one's of the fictional people so that you don't feel as bad while you're dealing with them.

I've no clue...but personally, i think the Hills is a stupid, mind-numbing show that should be removed from all public domain television.
