Welcome to Gaia! ::

I would like to talk about women in religion.

I know the way Islam pictures women and the bad way some of the followers treat women and the way the media shows muslim women and i know in every religion there are people who twist it. So i don't believe my image of women in other religions are correct because of media and the bad people of that religion.

so if you will please tell me how women are treated in your religion. Please say how they are treated and looked at and give some scripture or something like that so i can understand better.

i would really like to hear from Christians because i have a horrible opinion of christians with women's rights and i don't know if that is true, and i would like to know the truth.

All religions are welcome though because i just want to learn.

ohh and as a last thought it would be nice if you said how the media shows your religion and women along with what the truth actually is but you don't have too.

In my religion, men and women are perfectly equal. Neither is superior or inferior, because they are both needed in order to maintain a balanced world. They both have distinct characteristics that complement one another.

I'm a Wiccan.

that is a really good religion, my father is Wiccan. Wicca is a really good religion for equality between the genders.

So were you born into it or did you find it later on?
I found it about four years ago, and I've studied it in combination with other paths. I suppose it just made the most sense to me, so in December I decided to self-initiate myself into this path. Its been a long journey, and I still have a long way to travel. What about you? What religion do you follow?

In my particular viewpoint from being a Zen Buddhist, all sentient beings are equal. There is also no real sense of self, so the idea of separating yourself from animals, or nature is as absurd as separating yourself from the other sex. You are a part of everything as much as it is a part of you.

However, Buddhism is tricky to sort of make a general statement for. There are many schools of thought in buddhism, and Buddhism is very much a product of the culture where the dharma blooms in. Western Buddhism is heavily influenced by European existentialist views and liberal viewpoints, However many of the eastern traditions may not have such views since they were in patriarchical societies to begin with so those views could have easily creeped in as well.

The Third I'd Really You Rather Didn't:

"I'd really rather you didn't judge people for the way they look, or how they dress, or the way they talk, or, well, just play nice, okay? Oh, and get this into your thick heads: woman = person. man = person. Samey = Samey. One is not better than the other, unless we're talking about fashion and I'm sorry, but I gave that to women and some guys who know the difference between teal and fuchsia."

In Heathenry men and women are treated much the same. Women had pretty decent rights before the Christian conversions. Here is some information about a specific Pagan Viking woman called Sigriư the Proud that may give you an idea about women's rights and how they were viewed by the Norse palaeo-Pagans.

While there are gender-related roles - for example, if a person carries a drinking horn around the circle in a ritual, that person is usually a woman - and things will be slightly different for different groups, there aren't really any rules about how men or women should be treated.

Modern WIcca might be.

But traditional Wicca, as it was created is hugely sexist, in favour of women.

Urgh can't be bothered to go into it.

Statement Retracted.
My particular brand of eastern-philosophy-flavored entheogen-using nonsense, or whatever you want to call it, isn't really framed with gender divisions in mind, but taking a look at the roots of it, I suppose it all depends on where you look. There have been sexist Taoists who believe in gender roles for the sake of balance, but I think this is being a bit overly literal. There are also of course people who have taken psychedelics with who treat women poorly, statistically speaking it'd be pretty impossible for every shaman who's ever lived to be a paragon of equality and understanding. However, I really just don't care. They don't speak for me, and I don't speak for them, even if I see some value in their philosophies. I don't really spend much time wondering whether or not a v****a makes you intrinsically less valuable as a human being, I don't really follow that kind of logic. Heck, I don't even spend much time thinking about v****a at all! To be honest with you, to me personally, if it doesn't bore me then it kind of makes me want to just... look away a little. I guess it isn't really my thing.

The bottom line is, I don't care what your gender is, or what your sex is, or whether you have three penises (well wait, no, that'd be interesting, but I wouldn't think less of you for it. But it begs the question, which one do you use?), or whatever. If you're a capable human being, you're a capable human being. If you aren't, you aren't.

Women in the Ancient Roman religion?
Vestal virgins come to mind, for starters. An elite, high-ranking group of priestesses devoted to the worship of the Sacred Fire. Sure, you had to remain a virgin for 30 years, but the privileges were more than worth it. Women were seen of as equally valued to men, even if you would never get, for example, any women fighting in the army. There are cases of women holding their own in a court of law, fighting in the area, holding their own property... Poorer women might have gotten the nastier end of the stick, but even grave markers to freewomen have been found that indicate or at least hint towards a real, deep love between the two sexes rather than 'herp derp, i take advantage now'.
