Reasons why it is important to have a Wiccan FAQ:
And to argue for an IQ test to be issued to people posting things online. wink

Honestly.

I'm thinking of writing up some mini-infodumps on basic misconceptions like "pagan=pre-christian" or "wicca is the same thing as witchcraft." That way, for people who don't bother to read the FAQ, real information can still be spread.

Not a half bad idea.

Part of the problem on the Pagan = Pre-Christian deal is that it could be considered a valid stipulative definition.

I guess sort of, except that stipulative definitions aren't for informing or correcting people, they're for making it easier to communicate. Which is the problem, you're right.

Yeah, I should do that.
I love reading the first page smile

Ok, so I don't look like a newb, I've read the first page, love it. Been in here before. Told ya'll it pwns.

Question:

Alright, I was watching "A Haunting" you may have seen it on the TVs if you ever get off of the computer (or maybe it's on Youtube), anyway. There was an episode about a demon and a "wiccan" who used a cleansing spell to get rid of the demon. He used a pendulum and at the five points put a candle and the guy said that the five candles represented the five gods of wicca.

I quirked a brow and did a scooby doo "Ruuh?", so I said something about it in TOWT in GD. Are there more gods than the Lord and Lady of the Isle in Wicca? Or would that be too inner court to know? You hear a lot how The Lord and Lady are the -main- gods, but are they the only gods?

Hmmm...

The Lord and Lady are the only deities who are worshipped within the context of Wicca - however, Wiccans believe, generally, that other deities do exist. The bit about 'five gods' is utter bullshit - I've never even heard it from fluff-lit before. People don't even bother following their bullshit books anymore: they just make up any old random s**t and call it Wicca.

Saw that episode at a friend's house. Not Wiccan.

Eclectic Neo-Pagan.

I know that Shadow has stated she worships gods outside of Wicca. But the Lord and Lady are the gods of Wicca, pure and simple.

Question:

Many people see Wicca as a "white light" based religion that only concentrates on the "Good" of life. That there are no "negative" spirits and the like. What is the true belief regarding dark and light and spirits?

I could have sworn someone stated something about it being a Wiccan ritual and the guy was a wiccan. Otherwise I wouldn't have cared.

Many people call stuff Wicca that's not Wicca though...

Now, I had a thought about that 'five gods' thing - could he have maybe, in a benefit of the doubt sort of way, meant the two faces of the God and the three of the Goddess? Or am I going off the rails again and into fluffland with thinking this as a possibility?

Honestly, that's exactly what I was thinking - that he's misinterpreting the idea of a triple-aspect goddess and a dual-aspect god as five separate deities.
