Wicca comes from an ancient religion called shamanism.

Evidence?
All Magikal religion comes from Shamanism, INCLUDING Wicca.
You're full of s**t.
Evidence? How long have you been practicing Wicca?

Don't shift the burden of proof. You've asserted that all witchcraft comes from shamanism, now please provide proof.

Also, not everyone here is Wiccan or has any form of initiation into Wicca Cynical hasn't said anything to imply he is Wiccan.

What is the elemental weapon of ether?

In any event, can you provide anything other that "I said so" to that?

Some kind of historical/archological study would be nice.

I would also like to know how Ceremonial Magic, the magic practiced by Kabbalists and certain Christians, came from anything but the Abrahamic tradition.

Do they now? And why are you spelling magic with a "k"?
I spell magik with a "k" to seperate magik from stage magik, Real from fake.

What's more interesting is that apparently now stage magic is spelt with a k too. I know I shouldn't point out spelling as I'm pretty bad at it too, but this one is so funny. rofl

You know, I didn't even notice that. I think my mind just inserted a "c".

I'm sorry, I mis-spoke, Wicca is BELIEVED to start from an ancient religion called Shamanism. The Shamans were medicine people, the power wielders, male and female. They wrought magick and spoke to the spirits of Nature.

From these primitive beginnings arose all magick and religion including Wicca. Though refined and changed for our world, Wicca still touches our souls and causes ecstasy--awareness shifts--uniting us with Deity. Many of the teachings of Wicca are Shamanic in origin

Spelling magik with a 'k' is my choice... it is how I distinguish it, and most of the Wiccans I know do the same, so it's just what I am in the habbit of doing.

As for the elemental weapon of ether... I believe it is air, but Im not positive...

oops xD like I said... habit... I seperate "magik" from stage magiC... lol... my fault... and Angry Robots, that's how I seperate the two, as well as a lot of other wiccans I know, however I know some who spell it regularly, and some who spell it magick. It's all just how you decide to destinguish it...

You can of course source all of this for me please. As I don't think Wicca stems from Shamanism, nor do I think all magical systems stem from Shamanism. I think you might misunderstand what Shamanism is too, as it is a practice specific to Mongolian/ Siberian tribal nations.

Wikipedia

Shaman originally referred to the traditional healers of Turkic-Mongol areas such as Northern Asia (Siberia) and Mongolia, a "shaman" being the Turkic-Tungus word for such a practitioner and literally meaning "he (or she) who knows".

The Tungus word has been further connected with Chinese sha men "Buddhist monk," from Prakrit samaya-, ultimately from Sanskrit. shramana "Buddhist ascetic" (see shramanism).

Accordingly, the only proper plural form of the word is shamans and not shamen, as it is unrelated to the English word "man".

In its common usage, it has replaced the older English language term witch doctor, a term which unites the two stereotypical functions of the shaman: knowledge of magical and other lore, and the ability to cure a person and mend a situation. However, this term is generally considered to be pejorative and anthropologically inaccurate. Objections to the use of shaman as a generic term have been raised as well, by both academics and traditional healers themselves, given that the word comes from a specific place, people, and set of practices.

[edit]
Criticism of the term "Shaman"
Certain anthropologists, most notably Alice Kehoe in her book "Shamans and Religion: An Anthropological Exploration in Critical Thinking", are highly critical of the term. Part of this criticism involves the notion of cultural appropriation. This includes criticism of New Age and modern Western forms of Shamanism, which may not only misrepresent or 'dilute' genuine indigenous practices but do so in a way that, according to Kehoe, reinforces subtly racist ideas such as the Noble Savage.

Obviously Wikipedia isn't the end all be all, but to my knowledge this is fairly accurate.

The k spelling, is a little unnecissary in my mind but that's your choice.

I'm going to let A Soporific handle the elemental weapon of ether. wink

Air is a distinct element. Earth, fire, water, air, and ether are Wicca's five elements.

It is clear that Wicca, as we know it today, did start in Gardner's time. This is clearly documented and proven.

Could you please post your sources on this stuff?
If this is common knowledge, I'm sorry, I don't know anything about Shamans.

Which one?
Why only deity, and not deities?

Why is there a need to distinguish it? Couldn't you simply say that you are not practing stage magic? Shouldn't the people you talk to know you're not practicing stage magic simply by the context of your conversation?

Air is an element, not a weapon of one.

Thank you for saving me the trouble of explaining how misused the word "shamanism" is. I can confirm that this is true bu referring to several books, unfortunatley, the credibility of my claim is low considering that I A) don't know the titles or authors by heart, and B) They are in swedish anyway.

And Killers, no offense, but could you stop buying the popular and wrong opinion without checking it up first for once? I've been following this debate, and even I, who consider myself to not know much about this kind of stuff, knows that you have made at least 15 severe errors (estimated, not calculated). You should really get some evidence to back you up.
Aww the Great Rite had me hoping I could get some easy poontang... I guess I'll just have to not be a slimeball but very nice thread anyways.
