Heyy c: So, in my ELA class, we've been reading Anthem by Ayn Rand. And all on the last couple pages and the back of the book, I see that Ayn Rand has her own philosophy called "Objectivism"

I'm curious as to what it is? I've googled it and all its done is confuse me, aha.

If someone could explain it in simple terms that would be WONDERFUL c:

Edit; Thanks bros, I think I get it now. c:
My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.

I'm not an expert or anything, but... it seems like Objectivism is subjectivity.

Also egoism.

(Also, spellcheck totally went wonky with "objectivism." It's funny, because it doesn't freak when I say Scientology.)

It's a philosophy that is generally considered absurd, incomplete, and childish by just about every professional Philosopher I've known. And I agree. It's very appealing to teenagers who are very angst-y, and said teenagers generally grow out of it.

This is Objective Realism in a nutshell:

You can tip the same post more than once (you have to leave a while between tips though).
I got the impression that objectivism was the belief in achieving one's own goals and happiness for the sake of using that same logic to help others do the same.

I didn't know objectivism was EXCLUSIVE to the individual.

Come to think of it, i still don't believe it.

Interesting article about Objectivism.
I strongly urge you to read some more into this topic and do a bit of your own research before asking others. As you can see you're already getting a few biased responses that don't even really cover what the philosophy is about. Objectivism evokes strong emotions from any person familiar with the subject, so it's always good to do your own research and formulate your own opinion.

I would say that the main goal of Objectivism is to promote the idea of the individual over the collective society. Though again, you should really do your own research.

I love that your teacher is having you read Anthem, it's good to get such discussions going in the classroom. If you enjoy Anthem, I strongly recommend you look into Rand's other novels. I enjoyed those quite a bit more than I did Anthem, and they really put Rand's point of Objectivism across.

While Objectivism doesn't come into play until Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rands Objectivism is essentially what you get if a woman tries to reason philosophically:
Her whole system rests on huge logical gaps sealed with emotions. She praises certain abilities and things just because she happens to like them in the first place, but she's too idiotic to get that. Call me a misogynist all you want, but if you want thinking done right, stick to men.

You are a misogynist and factually wrong about women.

Objectivism is full of holes and a debacle in practical action though.

Ayn Rand had p***s envy. This is a fact.
I'll try to butcher Any Rand's very extensive philosophy into a little one liner:

Live for your self-interests and only for your self-interests for that is what is best for you.
