Is your girlfriend ignorant as to where some of the scientific theories came from and why? No offense, but really, that just seems sad to me.

I shall elaborate. She isn't referring to it as the the human study of science but the scientific laws of nature. She believes that religion, being an invention of human culture, does not hold when conflicting with the physical nature of things. For instance, the example she gives is that," if a nuclear bomb is about to hit you, no matter who you are, you can pray and pray and pray as hard as you want but it won't stop the reactions going on in the atoms and you will be inevitably fried.... well... your flesh would evaporate off your bones and you'd just go Fwoof! Just because 'God loves you', doesn't mean you will be spared."
