Which by your logic means porn devalues porn, not porn devalues sex. If the object that is more accessible is less valuable, then it doesn't necessarily drag related items with it, and you're initial argument seemed to be aimed at the initial object, which is porn.

Porn is a substitution of sex. Its related to each other, whether or not you like to believe it. If a male masturbates, will he want to have sex right afterwards? They are directly related in some cases, and indirectly in others. It does drag related items with it, because PORN DOES AFFECT SEX. As we continue to your other quotes, you even mention that it can be even considered the "clearest and most direct demonstration of sex".

Porn cheapens how obtainable sex and sex substitutes are.

Of course. But this is like insulting one teaching method in favor of another simply because not everyone learns or wants to learn from the method you insulted. But the same is true of the method you favor.

Yes, I do insult this teaching method, because its not preferrable for one to learn these things because of the risks involved. Porn after all, can be damaging. Some do see this as harmful. And if it is harmful, is it even an acceptable way to teach? Is it worth risking when there are other resources out there?

People don't use porn to learn, they use porn to arouse urges. And when they do learn things, they only learn them out of sheer convenience. its not knowledge that an individual can really depend upon. After all, it does come from porn, and a lot of it is very unrealistic to what sex is.

So you mean to tell me that it clearly demonstrates what sex is? But what is sex truly? I guess technically it is sex, but its garbage.

Riahlize
Now you lost me. There are a number of different porn videos which directly teach how to please your partner, how to try different techniques, how to explore and so on. As for the rest of porn, it can be easily argued as the clearest and most direct demonstration of sex.

Except that Porn is different than sex. The women are described in porn are typically not even close to being a "real woman". Porn affects males in ways I don't think you understand. They only see half the picture of sex. The source tells a little more. Porn cannot be "clear and demonstrative" if its biased towards what males typically "want to see". That is not clear, and it cannot demonstrate sex truthfully.

Riahlize
And that means you also invalidate your initial argument. If you question who is to say it's a value, you should also question who is to say it us a devalue.

That's cool. Its about perspective.

Spectating is a substitution of playing sports. It's related to each other whether or not you like to believe it. If a male practices sports, will he want to play in a full game afterwards? (Henry, this is just to show you how silly your argument looks from my perspective, using an analogy.)

I read the article you quoted about Porn affecting men in startling ways, but isn't there different types of porn. There's ones that are truly what the article describes as women simply wanting to ******** while there are some that actually have some story to it, albeit most of the time that story is shoddy at best, but still a story in which the women have reasons for wanting to have sex other then 'i'm horny'. In these cases, would porn be so bad?

I read the article you linked to. As evidence that porn harms you cite a bachelor's thesis for an arts major that, frankly, I would have failed. There is no actual "study" anywhere in the paper, it's merely an opinion piece by the author. It "studies" a mere 13 people (all between the ages of 18 and 23, so presumable just college students). The low sample size is understandable given that this isn't really a "scholarly" paper, but the complete lack of any indication to gather any real data from these students is not. Even worse, the paper gives neither selection criteria for those students nor reporting criteria for the data which, combined with the haphazard way it "reports" their responses, makes me suspect that the author cherry picked the data. No indication of what actual effects the students exposure/non-exposure to pornography might have had is even considered.

In other words, it is nothing more than an opinion piece making a poor attempt to look "scholarly" by citing others' opinions. It contains no actual evidence of porn causing harm whatsoever.

If you're going to cite an article to aid your point, cite one that has undergone peer-review, or at least contains some useful metrics of the actual effects of porn, and not just people's opinions.

masturbation is not bad. God provided it so that whenever we are lonely and far away from our loved ones or even just having no significant other, we could release that depressive feeling and thus boost our mood. i dont have any bible verse to support this but one thing for sure it says in the bible that when you look with lust to a woman, you've sinned already. and that porn scene in your mind would be considered as a sin of the mind.

Masturbation doesn't always boost the mood because there are those who would do so out of routine or just because and then once done they have a sort of depression because they don't have someone that they could do such an act with other then themselves. In this case is masturbation a sin or just something sad?

I didn't get very far into porn until after first becoming sexually active.

And before that, I didn't fap from it.

Maybe it's the regularity of sex that devalues it. People who watch a lot of porn see a lot of sex so it's nothing really special, and for people who have a lot of sex the act of doing it is nothing new either.

Why keep beating around the bush? It's not porn you're opposed to, it's sex. You've been taught that it's wrong to have a healthy, nonchalant attitude about sex. As a result you have this huge hang-up about sex that causes you to lash out against anything related to it.

In other words, you've been damaged.

And because those who damaged you in this way are no doubt people you trust, you have to consider everyone with a healthy attitude about sex as being the ones who are "really" damaged in order to avoid the realization of just how severely you've been wronged.

If it's a sin, then everyone is guilty. Guess we're all sinners. Fortunately, someone died for our sins, so we should be in the clear.

Well... for those who actually believe that is...

And for those that don't, there is no sin. The problem solves itself. Can't judge those who haven't sinned!

Hold on, so you're telling me that jail will disappear if I stop believing in prison? Hmm...seems legit...

Back to the topic at hand: As with most behaviors/actions, these things go much deeper than the surface. People see "pornography" on the surface and want to diagnose. That's like prescribing Tylenol for a cough when you have AIDs. What's the underlying reason for wanting to view porn? A few possibilities:
- I want to satisfy my sexual desires on my own time frame (I get it when I want it).
- I'm lonely/upset and I just want to feel better ("fill the void" mentality).
- I lack confidence to actually approach a person I'm interested in (I want a victory in the "win column" before I attempt).

That list could continue on with a multitude of other reasons, but are these reasons sinful at the basis?

"I get it when I want it": This is a selfish mentality that takes a God-given gift and bends it to your will (I've already lost a few readers because I said, "God-given" wink . This type of thinking can affect how you view the opposite sex--instead of actually meeting people, you start unconsciously analyzing how sex would be with them. Even if this notion is denied, treating sex in this way still corrupts the original intent for sex. A few verses associated with this: Matthew 5:28; Colossians 3:5.

"'Fill the Void' Mentality": This is a self-sufficient mentality that seeks to use quick satisfaction to bring encouragement and a sense of equilibrium. There are a few problems with this line of thinking, though. 1) The satisfaction is fleeting. It's very similar to getting high and then coming down from the high. You usually end up lower than you began. 2) This action is an attempt to fill a void that only God is big enough to fill; so you end up having to turn to it again and again, never being fully satisfied. A few verses associated with this: Ecclesiastes 2:8-11; 2 Samuel 13:7-15.

"Victory in the 'win column'": This is basically a combination of the first two.

What all of these boil down to is this: Pride. The same sin that led to the Fall in Genesis 3: Man wants to be God. How can I be my own god? By setting up my own kingdom--the kingdom of self. Within that kingdom, I do whatever is necessary to serve my own ego and desires--even masturbation through porn.

I've gone on long enough, so I'll clarify and wrap up. This answers the original post from a Biblical perspective. This may be considered nonsense to people who don't believe in Jesus; after all, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who don't believe--1 Corinthians 1:18. Still, God calls His followers to a holy life, avoiding sexual immorality and marked by self-control--1 Thessalonians 4:3-8.

masturbation

haha seems like it varies from people to people. but for most i think it is beneficial. but i've also heard that others were guilty only after the time they does it because they think they commit murder or something which makes them sad. Masturbation is a sin depends on who you fantasize ek. if you masturbate other than your s.o. then you're committing adultery, but it was never a murder because life begins at conception. but in my case.. since im single, i would consider it as a recreational hobby for me. im not committed to anybody so i guess no sin there haha. XD

to wrap it up, masturbation is a sin, beneficial, or harmful depending on how you "take" it. XDD

No, I don't think a healthy amount of sex is wrong. It can make people happy and if people love one another and do it why the hell should I care. I'm just wondering why porn is so wrong. You see more aggression toward porn then you do sex.
