Welcome to Gaia! ::

-This thread, and post, marks my return to Gaia. I was recently kicked from TED (another discussion site) for abrasive and insulting comments, and they were right to do so. I was a jackass =). I am an old member of Gaia and old to M&R. I was here when M&R was filled with intellectuals of all faiths and disciplines. And it is nice to see that some things in M&R never change. Wiccans flock about, abortion is still prevalent, and Christians continue to assert themselves and are subsequently attacked; though rightly so in most cases. How old am I to Gaia? Well, lets just say I was here when BDSM and s3x slavery were abundant threads in the RP section of the site. Lots of fun in those days although I was under a different alias, “Legacy-Weapon[L4rg0]”.
-The above is, of course, irrelevant. We are here to discuss.
-In the links provided, you will find a discussion thread on a particular topic. Naturally, like most internet debates, it has turned into something more virulent and, or course, interesting.
-Ms. Bridget Treton makes the claim that the Bible (Old/New Testament) is a Kabbalistic training manual for spiritual initiates. She gives a handful of examples and many more claims that the Bible holds “hidden messages” that only “the wise” can understand. Naturally this all reeks of bullsh*t, but the prevailing notion is what I find of interest. Before my ban, I gave my own interpretation on Ms. Tretons examples, from the Ark of the Covenant, to several Biblical quotes. Of course, my comments were deleted along with my account; and it may seem that I mention Ms. Treton by name out of some sort of spite. Though amusing, I did find her comments interesting and I desired to investigate.
-(Q)Kabbalistic Theory is thought to have arisen ‘after’ the Bible was written, but she asserts that the connection exists.
-Another idea she proposes is that science has not ‘discovered’ anything. Modern science has just ‘corroborated’ ‘ancient science’ which can be found in Scripture; and that we can use scripture to launch science into a new realm of discovery and into the future. She links the (Q)Kabbalistic Tree of Life to the Human Body, the Ark to the Pituary and Pineal Gland, and gives her interpretation on several Biblical quotes.
-Can Science benefit from Scripture? Are there hidden messages in the Bible; and are they worthy of our time and thought? Is trying to link something like Kabbalism to modern times a last ditch effort to get people to re-evaluate the relevance of ancient texts?
-Even if the theory is viable, isn’t scripture meant for ‘personal’ enlightenment rather than as a guiding light to humanity as a whole?

-Challenge everything. From my statement that the Bible preceeded the Kabbalah, to the questions I pose. I’ll give my own two cents in another post.

-All Hail M&R. Conquer we must. For our cause; it is Just.
-When I read scripture, and read it I have, I admit to trying to divulge a “hidden message” or attempt to find a “deeper meaning” to what I have read; from the words of Christ to Revelations. However I cannot stop here. I continue my search in the realms of Philosophy, Esoteric thought, Biology, Psychology and so forth. It is easy for anyone to take a modern development or recent event and tie it to a vague, incomplete text such as the Bible; people have done the same with the prophecies of Nostradamus, tying everything from Hitler to 9/11 to his prophecies. Its easy to “look to the past” in these matters, but significantly harder to take Nostradamus, or the Bible, and attempt to apply it to current or possible future events.
-I admit, that I have read certain books, from Carl Jung to Manly P. Hall, that are essentially based on ancient/spiritual text where the authors attempt to give an explanation that relates to anything relevant today, from Psychology to Spiritual Growth. And I have been thought provoked by such books, and admit they may even shape my thought process to this day. But I also admit that such ‘knowledge’ (if you’ll indulge me) only holds true within the realm of “my Mind”. I can try, with limited success, to convince others of my discoveries, but the notions fall short due to the lack of hard evidence. Hell, I am still having trouble convincing myself that I actually ‘exist’.
-But, clearly, the notions do present an opportunity for interesting discussion, which no rational human will pass up. Unless there is a football game on.

"L4rg0" looks familiar, but not quite.

I take it you're Thomas Jones. Anyway, I haven't read up on Kabbalah to really participate.

Welcome back, M&R oldbie.

-No, I participated on TED under the name "Avenir Sinclaire" but that name, and all the comments attached to it, were deleted.

Ah. Thomas Jones and Bridget Treton seem to have a history, and you mentioned her, which is why I thought you were Jones.
Can you reiterate this in a more readable format? I'm not sure wtf you're getting at.

Sure; basically the following questions are posed

-Can Science benefit from Scripture? If so, How?
-Is trying to link something like Kabbalism to modern times a last ditch effort to get people to re-evaluate the relevance of ancient texts? Or is this just another Hollywood trend?
-Even if we could, isn’t scripture meant for 'personal' enlightenment rather than as a guiding light to humanity as a whole?; surely something not 'everyone' was meant to follow.

- Or should we just approach scripture and the books they've spawned as: interesting, thought-provoking, and sometimes entertaining(?)
