Hey all,

This came up tonight in another thing offsite and I wanted to take a moment to discuss confidence and image... In this situation, someone posted a photo on a convention forum that showed a cosplayer who looks great and put a lot of effort into her costume. Super-imposed on this photo are comments such as:

"2/10 WOULDN'T BANG HER" (Caps used as that is what it looked like)
"Too ugly to cosplay"
"Hanging arm fat"

As well as other nitpicks about her looks, pose, and costume itself. The thing is that the person in the photo had no idea that this was going to happen. I can't post it here because the photo itself is being taken care of but I wanted to discuss this. Things I have found out so far:

*It's an internet meme
*The makers actually think she's beautiful

Why does any of the previous make something like this okay? It doesn't matter if you're curvy or skinny, it doesn't even matter if you're male or female. It happens to all of us, and I think we need to be aware.
If the meme makers think she's beautiful, then you're missing the joke. Try looking up some "successful black man" images and maybe you'll get it.

Mooby is right, it sounds like the meme was meant to be ironic, and meant to mock the neckbeard guys who would be hypercritical of others. Many memes use pictures as a method of delivery of the message and doesn't have much of anything to do with the image itself.

Successful black man plays on black racial stereotypes and flips it around to something very upper middle classy
"I'M SMOKING THIS // Salmon for dinner tonight"

Or something similar is Third World Success Kid that mocks first world views of the third world with a pick of a little dancing african kid with things like "SOMEONE FINISHED THEIR WHOLE DINNER FOR ME" (Eat your food, there are children starving in africa).

Often times there's more than meets the eye with these memes.
I don't think you're old enough to be on the Internet.

Try the other way around. I'm probably too old/mature to be on the Internet. wink

True but sometimes emotions aren't as easily controlled as most people like to think.

As I thought about this more and more, I think what bugged me is that it isn't like this was posted on a meme site, this was posted on the con's forum where the subject of the meme was guaranteed to find it. Also, not everyone is guaranteed to be in on the joke...
