The only place that bible mentions a firey torment is with the illustration of Lazerus and the Rich Man,...

other than that it states that the soul is concious of nothing at all....meaning that how can a sould be tourmented eternally when it isn't concious....

I don't believe in hell..it goes against everything the bible says about God being a loving and caring God.

That was a parable about Christianity being given to the poor people instead of the rich, and possibly about moving toward the NT and out of OT. But, it is speculated. So much is made up about that verse, but it isn't literal. The Fire and Brimstone Hell was adopted from Dante's Inferno where it lies within the 7th Circle. Don't believe, look into it for yourselves. As a matter of fact, neither was there any place called "Hell."

Hell is from the Old English Hel(l) and is Germanic in origin. It is related to Dutch hel and German Hölle, from an Indo-European root meaning ‘to cover or hide.’ Old Norse Hel was the proper name of the goddess of the infernal regions.1

Why do you welcome any for of paganism into your bible if you do not agree with it? I agree with eternal Hell, yet I know it came from stupid pagan religions. See what I mean?
It's bull.

I absolutely concur.

As one fluent in both Classic Hebrew and Koine Greek, there is indeed no place called "Hell" in the Bible.

Yeah, and that Hel chick with a half rotten body? Not exactly eternal fire and punishment, but it'd be like marrying that exof mine... hell enough. Ew.

Why do you think the whole afterlife concept is basically irrelevant to Jews? They focus more on the here and now, and how we live our lives and treat others. Not on what's going to happen when we die.

Jesus made more reference to the fires of Gehinnom than anyone in the Hebrew Scriptures did. And mind you, it is a burning garbage dump outside of Jerusalem. Not a mystical place of Holy Torture. One thing we have a hard time understanding in the modern West, is the language of the Semites.

The Semitic people used an entirely different language than us. (be it Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, etc). English is a definite, precise language. Each word has a clear-cut meaning. We have also absorbed many words from many languages, so that we can maintain that preciseness. For instance, when I almost got married, I had a "fiancee". A word of French origin.

The Semitic tongues are very imprecise. Every single word comes from a three letter root. This root can be turned into a verb, noun, adjective, plural, singular, past, future, etc. And, each word has at least 3 different meanings in English. This is one of the reasons it is so difficult to translate Hebrew and Aramaic into English. It could take 5 words of English to describe the one concept in the Hebrew.

So, my original point before the Semitic lecture biggrin Hebrew, like other Semitic languages, is highly symbolic. Filled with metaphors, figures of speech, and illusions.

This causes SOOOOO many problems, when irrational Protestants firmly hold to the belief "The Bible is the literal word of god. You must obey exactly what it says."

Taking such a symbolic language literal leads to nothing but catastrophe...

Out of Curiosity instead of the nine mentions of Hell in the New Testament, what words exactly are used in it's place in the original Greek?

Of the four times hell is used in Revelation, the word Hades is its original Greek root. “In each of these references to Hades, there is no insinuation of ‘torments or punishments by fire’ as the orthodox churches would have you believe...If the lake of fire comes the nearest to the idea of hell, and if Hades is also hell, then is hell cast into hell? On the other hand, do we cast a lake of fire into the lake of fire? Keeping that in mind, if you think of Hades and Sheol in terms of the grave, which receives the dead and is therefore coupled with death, then the Apostle Paul’s prophecy regarding death would also destroy the grave (Sheol and Hades) when he wrote: The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death (1 Corinthians 15:26). If death is destroyed, then the grave is destroyed, also.”5

“The lake of fire and brimstone signifies a fire burning with brimstone. The word ‘brimstone,’ or sulfur, defines the character of the fire. The word ‘therion’ (Greek), translated brimstone is exactly the same word ‘therion’ which means divine. Sulfur, or brimstone, was sacred to the deity among the ancient Greeks and was used to fumigate, to purify, and to cleanse and to consecrate to the deity: for this purpose they burned it in their incense...The verb derived from ‘theion’ is ‘theioo,’ which means to hallow, to make divine, or to dedicate to a god.”6

“To any Greek, or to any trained in the Greek language, a ‘lake of fire and brimstone’ would mean a ‘lake of divine purification.’ Divine Purification and Divine Consecration are the plain meaning in ancient Greek. In the ordinary explanation, this fundamental meaning of the word is entirely left out., and nothing but ‘eternal torment’ is associated with it.”7

Skipping onto............

In his book Counterfeit Christianity, E. Raymond Capt describes today’s concept of hell: “It is interesting to note that the Book of Acts contains the history of the journeys, labors, and preaching of the apostles for over thirty years. Yet in all that time they did not preach or warn their converts about hell! Nor is the word ‘hell’ found in the writings of the Apostle Paul. He was a preacher of the Gospel for thirty years, and he asserts that he did not fail to declare ‘The whole counsel of God.’ Yet he never, in a single instance, used the word ‘hell.’ It is not found in Romans, or in 1st or 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, in 1st or 2nd Thessalonians, in 1st or 2nd Timothy, Titus, Philemon, or Hebrews. Nor is it found in 1st Peter, or in 1st, 2nd or 3rd John.”16

“The current concept of hell as a place of eternal fire and punishment was brought to the world by Greek and Iranian mythology...Our present hell which has gradually undergone changes in its meaning, is not a proper translation of either the Hebrew or Greek.”17

Thanks Gypsy! Very intelligent. O_O xp
Because you have to ask for forgiveness. If you don't, then apparently, God will see it as you not recognizing your sins and sends you to hell for it.

I've never actually read the entire bible, so I'm not clarified on this.

Some believe Hell to be a place to atone for your sins before you are allowed into Heaven.

You know I've always liked that way of thinking. If you do something bad, you should be punished for it. But punished for all eternity for one mistake? No I don't think so. What if you had already accepted your wrongness and rehabilitated yourself? Why would you still have to suffer for one wrong decision. Receiving your punishment, and understanding you were wrong and starting fresh, that's the way is should be. Not eternal torment.

That is repentance ^_^
Well, if you go by the common definition of hell, it doesn't make sense. He creates a place that promotes eternal suffering, when he's suppose to hate the sight of it.

Punishment in itself is considered a time out, in order for you think about why you were punished, in hopes of them seeing their error, correcting it, and making it no longer applying to them anymore. However, by having that punishment to be eternal, defeats the purpose of learning from it, which isn't really punishment, just vengeance by the judge who put you there for staying unrepentant.
Apparrently hell is for those who sin and don't ask for forgiveness.

If god really forgives than why is there a hell. some people say because you have to ask for forgiveness. Well still why is tthere a hell.

its pretty straight forward, God forgives but doesn't forgive everyone, simple because they don't ask for forgiveness.
It's easy if you can answer this question correctly:

If Herald eats, why isn't everyone else starving?
That is right, a God of love wouldn't put a person in hell.
And he doesn't the world is translated "hades" which means common grave.
The bible tells us where we go when we die,
Ecc 9:5
" For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten".

The Bible doesn't lie, and this is true!!

Because if you read in all these threads you will find plenty of people who do not believe in the existence of god. Therefore, they won't ask for that forgiveness. Hell is for the non-believers who do not call upon god for forgiveness. Hope that helped.
