Welcome to Gaia! ::

I've been baptized under the Catholic Faith, but to be honest I've never actually understood it. I never served first communion nor have I ever participated in Sunday school. I use to attend mass every Sunday when I was a child, but I was just a child and I didn't understand what was going on.

I some what understand what Jesus did, but I'm often very confused about the aspect of God, Heaven, Purgatory and Hell.

My first concern is God... Was Jesus God? I remember people debating about this because of something he had said to someone.

How come God is very vengeful and punishes people by sending them to hell for eternity? A large portion of the world does not believe in the Religion or just doesn't know about it. Does that mean a huge portion of the world will be sent to hell upon dying? Some how I would expect a supreme being to be more forgiving.

How come God seems to be limited? The concept of God usually implies being omniscient and unlimited in terms of power. Yet it seems God is very limited; only having one son...

I try to put things in perspective... People back then where not really that intelligent or skeptical. They blindly believed a lot of things with out much logic. Makes me believe a one person could trick a mass group of people into doing something with a little intelligence and foresight.
Well you see, thousands of years ago, people didn't understand much, so they made up a bunch of stories.

Many continue to stick with the stories today instead of actually learning anything.

The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus was both 100% human and 100% divine at the same time, because yes, He was God, so he could do both simultaneously.

How come God is very vengeful and punishes people by sending them to hell for eternity? A large portion of the world does not believe in the Religion or just doesn't know about it. Does that mean a huge portion of the world will be sent to hell upon dying?

Because the Catholic Church teaches that God made the universe, and everything in it. He wants some recognition for His work and some thanks, but most of all, He wants people to believe that He exists, since it is a mystery whether He does or not. I cannot remember what the Catholic Church teaches about people who do now know about Jesus or God. But I think it is safe to assume that whatever happens to them after death could be less painful than what happens to people who deny God (which is the "unforgivable sin" that nobody can ever redeem himself/herself for committing).

How come God seems to be limited? The concept of God usually implies being omniscient and unlimited in terms of power. Yet it seems God is very limited; only having one son...

He needed only one to do what He wanted to get done here on Earth 2000 years ago. And according to Christian teaching in general, we are all His children, so really God is not limited to having just 1 son. Jesus was the only divine son, but God will continue to have children as long as humans make babies.

And God may seem limited because people are incapable of fully understanding what it is to be infinitely unlimited. Skeptics will also claim that since God does not smite all of the bad people of the world where they stand, He must not exist, because He must not have that kind power. But the Catholic Church will tell you that no matter what, God is omniscient and omnipresent, all-powerful and all-knowing, blah blah blah more redundant stuff, and that no matter what, He can do whatever He pleases when He pleases, and also that things that people like skeptics will question God's authority over are here for a reason, because God is a mystery and works in mysterious ways.

EDIT:: I just had a thought. If Jesus's purpose was to take away the power of sin, then I think everybody is supposed to go to heaven when he/she dies. Not so sure about what happens to people who commit the unforgivable sin though.

Was Jesus God? I get into arguements with my grandmother about this all the time. It doesn't make sense to me because in the bible there are times where Jesus prays to God. It doesn't make sense that he prays to himself. Some people say that he is the son of God so, If you are the son of God, then you can't be God.

As far as God being vengeful and sending people to hell for not believing......I think it depends on who you ask. I'm pretty sure this is mentioned in the bible, but I'll have to go look it up. From what I've been taught, those who don't believe or don't know go to purgatory. Hell is suppose to be for the sinners who do not confess their sins or seek forgiveness.

I don't know why God had only one son, maybe that is all he wanted?

Also, people needed to explain how things happened in the world. I guess people ended up believing because they could not come up with any other explanation.

Jesus is the son of God.. Atleast so I have been taught. I think God is vengeful because humans are vengeful. In the bible it states that God made humans after himself. Maybe God is short-tempered like that (even though it also states in the bible that God forgives everything you do... so that makes me doubtful again)
I don't know about the last question, it's more of a personal opinion. God might seem limited to you, but it doesn't have to be limited for other people.

God doesent interfere with the choices we make he gave us the power of choice to choose in wether to believe in him or not. If You do believe in him you will be rewarded the kingdom of heaven in the afterlife. If You deny God you will die in a state of hell. God just wants you to know who gave you this gift of life. The reason the earth is the perfect size and the perfect distance from the sun. Scientist cannot and never will find the true orgins of life. religion is absolute while science is uncertian

Jesus was only praying by example to show his followers how to contact him jesus was only preparing people for the future he already knew. His whole human life was just an example on how to maintain a relationship with god

Jesus was not God. When someone says, "Jesus was God", people tend to think "God" means a personal being, when in fact all it means is "divine nature". The only reason anyone uses "God" when saying "Jesus is God" is because if one said, "Jesus had a divine nature", then no one would probably care, since angels have a divine nature as well. Jesus was not God, and his followers and others did not think of him as such.

Not all believe that Gehenna is eternal. I am not of the opinion of an eternal punishment like I used to be. I am also not convinced that God will restore everyone. Instead, I am of the opinion that, if I was a Christian, unbelievers will end up ceasing to exist.

Try two if you include Adam, since he didn't have any parents. El, the chief of Canaanite pantheon, had seventy sons. Each son was a god of a nation. As theology shifted over time, Yahweh went omni-mode.
that was always one of my biggest questions too - why an almighty, loving god would send or let people go to hell...

Speaking as a non-Christian, this makes sense. If he made humans in his image, then that would to an extent make him responsible for human nature, free will included.
