Encyclopia of Wars (3 Volume set)
Records 1763 wars. Only 123 of the wars covered have religious causes.
Wars cost resources. So usually they are expended over the cause of gaining more resources, preserving resources, money, property, goods, etc. Real estate! lol. It costs resources to go to war, so to go to war on purely religious grounds is difficult. Although you may gain resources in doing so, if it's not the objective, that may not be the case. But what may I ask is the point of asking atheists such an obvious question. It hints at including some form of generalization, which I despise, but I shall wait and see.

I wasn't debating the point the OP made wink I agree with it, but suggested adding citations and sources due to the fact that this is in the ED.
One wonders how loathsome a thing must be when "but it's only been responsible for just under 7% of all the wars in history" is a point in it's favor.

But as to the original question, I'm quite aware that it's not responsible for the "majority" or wars, and of those 123 I'd be surprised if it was the sole cause of any. It's a common contributer to conflict by virtue of being an easy way for people to divide into arbitrary groups, but wars are usually fought over resources.

Are you going somewhere with this?

I suppose I could debate the exact numbers and circumstances, that the definition of what wars have religion as a pretext is difficult to pin down when religion and government are so intertwined, that more well-known religious wars are notable for their length and the number of people involved, and so forth.

But, what it comes down to is, I understand people fighting over land and power and money. These are essential human motivations, however despicable I might find them as motives for warfare. But fighting because god said so is a ******** terrifying motive.

Maybe that's just my opinion of the thing.

I didn't think you were. Just figured I throw a credible source out there so there would be something to work with. Sorry if I came off as aggressive. I've been getting that alot lately.

Wow. I didn't think there were that many wars over religion. I thought it would have been less than that for some reason.

It's probably because of those rejects who come into any discussion forum and say Christianity is responsible for all wars. Which those people get shot down and ignored. Just like people are going to start ignoring someone who doesn't know how to make a title and subject at least two separate sentences. Isn't that right OP? Oh yes it is. Yes it is.

In the cases where religion doesn't cause war, it seems to instead deceive and cover up the true cause of war and direct the zeal towards that cause for their own ends.

I didn't realize that there were nearly 2000 wars.
