THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL INPUT.
I'D BETTER LEAVE MY FRIEND ALONE NOW SINCE HE'S HAPPY BEING THAT WAY.

Can you call yourself "god" even if you proclaim you are an atheist?

Not without being intellectually dishonest/theatrical.

He came to that realization because he says that he was able to rise from his problems and that there are spirits who help him after he summoned something after all the years he studied the occult.

I'm just curious really

Invoking Magical Mister Mephistopheles is a special kind of theatrical.

That would make him a witch, not a god.

I am indeed a god, you all exist only as a figment of my imagination as I narrate the universe into being.
He might be.

One question bugs me though-
Can you call yourself "god" even if you proclaim you are an atheist?

Depends on what he may mean?

This might be over his head, but the Abrahamics faiths are not human centric. They believe that humanity (you) is filled with sin and hatred. So you as an EVIL PERSON needs to be ashamed, and repent and apologize for your sinful birth, even if it seems like you have done nothing wrong.

On the flip side, there are religions and doctrines that view the Abrahamic belief about human nature to be harmful. There's a number of ways they react to that, but one of them is the idea that humans themselves are gods. What that means is that humanity is not beholden to an invisible deity who pushes us around, but that humanity actually has the capacity to determine its own success or not. We have the ability to determine how life turns out.

OR, you friend could just be trying to annoy your mutual religious friends.

Sounds pantheist to me. Some consider themselves to be both.
He is right about being a god. Humans are in fact gods.

Eh?

OP, spirits and occult lead to godhood? I mean... apotheosis is quite a claim. Have you asked your friend to prove his godhood? It might give a good idea of what kind of god he claims to be.

Best possible response is to do nothing.

Pantheism is jazzed-up atheism; Catfish knows this.

There seems to be a lot of dispute over whether pantheism is jazzed up atheism or soft and fuzzy science-friendly theism.

I'd rather respond with "yes" and let everybody else worry about it. emotion_awesome
