Welcome to Gaia! ::

So I am completely new to RO and I went through the beginner part. It pretty much told me about NPCs, how to fight, use skills, etc.

But it doesn't really tell me what I am supposed to do in game? How do I know where the quests are? Do you just find them yourself? There's no list or anything so.

It might be because I am used to playing games with specific things to do, but RO is really confusing me at the point since I have no idea what to do next or what I am supposed to be doing.

It's not very friendly to new users it seems. D:
It is fairly sandbox, which can be a deterrent for new players and gamers who are used to a little more guidance.

Basically you can go off and free-form grind until you're ready to take your job quests, or you can talk to NPCs and see if they want anything from you.

It's pretty much up to you how you want to play. Join a group and hunt the powerful guys, grind your heart out, go looking for rare and valuable items, or catch a ride on the rails where you can find them.
Abbsinu is right, pretty much sandbox is easiest way of putting it. I played a long time ago and put it to the side, i just recently picked it back up and starting from scratch. With all the updates and the renewal patch im pretty much a newb again in the game. If you want someone to run around in game and help you out i can to the best of my abilities, and what i cant answer i can find answers. plus i need people to chill with ingame. What server you on. Im on Valk and Ygg. pretty equally.
ah I like the idea of a sandbox MMORPG.

Next question, how the hell is one supposed to avoid dying? Me and my GF die every few mins killing mobs cause we get ganged up on and potions are like... 200z a piece.

yum_tea A good way to avoid dying is to have an Acolyte or Priest in your party. Potions can be expensive; at the lower levels, it's easier to rely upon dropped food items like Meat or Milk to heal yourself than potions. You can also make a Merchant to help with the cost of healing items; Merchants have the skill Overcharge, which can be used to sell junk items to NPCs at a higher price than usual, and they also have access to the skill Discount, which can be used to buy NPC items at a lower cost. Merchants also have access to the ability to Vend items directly to other players, which can help you earn more zeny to spend on items and equipment. When you've become more accustomed to the game and its mechanics, you can turn your Merchant into either a Blacksmith, which can forge weapons, or an Alchemist, which can brew potions, in order to offset your costs a bit.

Also, you might be tackling mobs that are just too powerful for the two of you at your level. It's best to only fight monsters within 15 levels of you, and if you're low leveled then you should avoid anything that's aggressive or that has the Assist ability in order to avoid getting a lot of monsters to dogpile you. You can use the iRO Wiki Database to search for monsters in your level range that will maximize your EXP gains with minimal risk of death.

I also heard getting more VIT will help you die less. Is this true?

Also when you say 15 levels.. do you mean above your current level or below?

We were fighting Thief Bugs and Familiars and we died quite often. And we were level 20 when this was happening.

Also thanks for your links. It just so happened that 95% of the mobs we were tackling were auto aggro or assisted. ><

I officially dub you the Goddess of Ragnarok xD

yum_tea VIT is a defensive stat. Getting more VIT will result in a higher HP pool, more soft Defense, and more resistance to certain status effects like Stun. Everyone needs at least a little VIT in order to survive. However, depending on your class VIT may not be the right primary defensive stat for you. Thief class and Archer class characters rely more upon Flee and/or Perfect Dodge, so if you're a Thief or an Archer you would benefit more from AGI or LUK, and you should concentrate on those skills.

You should fight monsters at or above your level, because if you fight monsters lower than yourself you will receive an EXP penalty and it will take longer for you to level up. However, if you try to fight something more than 15 levels higher than you, you will also receive an EXP penalty; this was done to prevent a practice called leeching, in which higher level players would take n00blets to a field with high level monsters and kill them en masse to get the lower leveled players easy EXP.

Thief Bugs are level 21, and Familiars are level 24. While this technically means that you should be able to kill them, Thief Bugs have the Assist skill and Familiars are aggressive, which means that they can and will gang up on you. Since both are high AGI, high DEX monsters, they will hit very fast and very accurately, effectively outdamaging you; if you don't have access to a lot of healing potions, they can quickly overwhelm you. My advice would be to take your girlfriend and the two of you go hunt Bigfoot outside of Payon; they're level 29 and have a bit more STR than Familiars and Thief Bugs, but their low AGI and DEX, natural passivity, and lack of Assist skill mean that they will be easier for two people to kill and will provide you with more EXP.

*EDIT* Sorry, I started this post before your edit, and I see that you've already discovered what makes Thief Bugs and Familiars such formidable enemies. And thank you, I don't know that I'm the Goddess of RO, but I have been playing off and on since open beta and I've become accustomed to the game's quirks. XD

Is there a free stat reset NPC in iRO? Because my thief is currently 20 STR, 30 AGI, 15 Dex, and 10 Vit ... I may have screwed up, hm? ^^; If there's a free stat reset (I know there is one for skills) then I'd really love to know where it is :'D Also IIRC, in Renewal STR is pretty important for all classes except mages, or am I wrong? ^^;

Alright, so 10~15 levels above, gotcha. I just feel that it's really easy to die. Cause most of the mobs do so much damage. (Around 50 ~ 70 damage a hit, pretty fast) But this is probably cause of the STR/AGI you've mentioned. Does anyone really train on mobs like that? Cause I saw there was a dungeon for 20~30 (The Prontera Culvert) and the boss there is 64.. Makes me wonder how they even got a level recommendation of 20 to 30 with that! XD Or are dungeons more of a party only thing? Or are they possible solo?

Sorry with all the questions! I feel like I am being bothersome D: It's just I am so used to Maplestory that a game like RO is very overwhelming for me. xD

yum_tea Sorry for the delayed reply, I had to fix lunch for my family really quick.

There is a free stat reset NPC in iRO. It's called the Mesmerist, and if I'm not mistaken it can be found somewhere inside the Eden Group HQ. The first use of the Mesmerist is free, but after that you'll have to use a Reset Stone; you can purchase Reset Stones from the Kafra Shop, or you can turn in Eden Merit Badges to the Merry Badger NPC to get them. You can earn Eden Merit Badges by doing various Eden Group Quests, or at higher levels by doing Turn-In Quests from the Gramps NPC.

Your Thief actually has pretty good stats so far; Thieves rely upon AGI as their primary defensive stat rather than VIT, so having more AGI than VIT is just fine. As a Thief, 10 VIT may be a bit much, but that's about what you would have by the time you were a 99/50 Assassin or Rogue, anyway, so as long as you don't add any more to it you'll be alright. 20 STR is good, you don't need to worry about that.

And no, Mages aren't the only class that use a stat other than STR to do damage. Archers and Gunslingers use DEX as their primary damage stat, and in fact need very little (if any) STR at all. Furthermore, almost any class that uses STR to do damage can substitute LUK instead to become a critical attack powerhouse. iRO is actually very forgiving as far as stats are concerned. Don't be afraid to play around and discover for yourself what each stat does and what works best for your playstyle!

People with very high Flee or very high Defense can and often do gather up large mobs to gain EXP more quickly. It helps to get gear that will boost one or both of those.

Dungeons are possible to solo, even at low levels, provided that you stay away from the miniboss and boss monsters that tend to dwell there. Keep in mind, though, that each dungeon zone will have a different level range of monsters, so not every dungeon will be appropriate for low leveled characters. They are always easier in a party, so if you're having trouble soloing or duoing a dungeon, don't be afraid to set up a chat in town or in Eden Group to find a party! You can also try to use the party booking system, but it's kind of arcane and very few people actually use it, so it might take longer.

You're not being bothersome at all! Everyone starts somewhere, and asking questions is the quickest way to learn. Feel free to ask me anything. If I don't know it right offhand, chances are I know the resource that can give you the answers. <3

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me. <3

Someone told me after renewal that all classes depend on STR for damage. But at least you cleared it up for me biggrin Thanks!

yum_tea No problem! I'm happy to help.

The person you spoke to most likely either specializes in melee classes, or else doesn't realize how ranged classes work (and may not even know that there are ranged classes at all). When in doubt, you can consult the Wiki's job class pages; each one will have two or three of the most common builds and their typical stat spreads listed, and it's a pretty good indication of which stats each class uses to deal damage.

*EDIT* Oh, I forgot to ask, what server are you on? If you're on Valk, I might have some HP and SP restorative items I can give you and your girlfriend to help the two of you out. PM me with your in-game names and I'll mail you some goods. <3
