I think we forgot the most important question for OP.

Can you solo in key?

Most of the time my solo falls into a chromatic and for whatever reason I've noticed the group I play with tends to key change a lot during break downs and solos.

Key changes can work if you transition into them smoothly.

But breakdowns will never work because they're breakdowns.

That sounds short for "they have no ******** clue what they're playing".
