Yeah there should... you ever heard of "noisecore"??? It's grindcore/hardcore punk fusion...

Not really, the only punk genres I've listened to were Hardcore, Post-Hardcore, Skate, Anarcho, New Wave (ya, its a form of punk), Post-Punk, Proto-Punk, Grunge? (would that count), Oi, Indie, Horror, and a few others...

And I already said that Manowar wasn't Viking, just only their lyrics. Didn't the guy who made this thread even say that Viking metal aren't bands that sings about the sword and sorcery stuff, that its completely different?

I know... sometimes you need more than ONE person to get it through their brains.

ya... grunge counts! (not a big fan of it though... I used to like it though.) But then again... I never really liked punk. Just a bit here and there...

"Didn't the guy who made this thread even say that Viking metal aren't bands that sings about the sword and sorcery stuff, that its completely different?"

I don't know about that but if that's the case, I'll look it up. Cause most of their themes seem to be related to power metal!!! Such as epic battles and victories and includes paganism and paganist gods... but I'll check it out!!!

This: A lot of people mistake Viking metal for any metal with lyrical themes about Viking or Fenno-Ugric mythology, Heathenism etc. However, this is a completely different musical style. Arrangements are usually more complex than the somewhat simple early black metal that originated in Norway in the early 1990s and Folk Metal is often mixed in, though it not a necessity by any means.

I really don't know how people would mistake that. Course I do know people who think that 3 IoB are viking metal due to their lyrics as well... =/

Well... Viking metal does seem to have a black metal sound (more specifically the new black metal) And I do hear folk metal in it... that's USUALLY a given (they go hand in hand) if you know folk or viking!! =)

Viking metal is not a distinct genre of music. The description given in the original post has more "these are not viking metal, it is not this" infact it doesn't actually describe it. Here's a clue IT'S NOT A GENRE. It's arguably an aesthetic but a genre? No. I get it, you like amon anarth, but at the end of the day, they could be easily classified as something else. Early enslaved progressive black metal. Once the post has some actual features viking metal has that are distinct from other genres, great I'll buy it, but it doesn't.

Also, arguably, metal in general, as a genre probably requires a definition for the absolute newbie. I would say it's primarily rhythmic (though that doesn't mean absence of melody) features heavy use of drums, especially the kick and usually features distorted guitars.

Oh and also, no new thrash albums recently? I know it's not the same, but the "thrash revival" which is basically people my age and younger who missed it first time round, digging up thrash again. I don't know about you guys, but "tales from beyond the grave in space" was great.

Broadly speaking, a genre is just an abbreviation for a load of defining characteristics, and as such genres used correctly help someone work out what to expect based on the genre label(s) applicable, however most great bands either help define a genre or break free of it's boundaries, or sometimes both. As such, genre labels should be flexible too. Chronology should not figure into it, and aesthetic alone shouldn't either.

What is wrong with you people and Nu Metal?! Its not a metal genre so stop asking, Nu Metal sucks balls anyways.

We're all just a bunch of what ifs in a what if world. So what if, just what if, we weren't in a what if world. Would things be chaotic? Boring? Would this even be voided? You decide on it.

I shall not change this until Final Fantasy IX is in the PSN.
