If you've logged in to Gaia, you have have noticed instead of being wisked into your account, you were prompted with a screen asking for some additional information. And so, that brings us to our next big announcement:
Introducing the new Password Retrieval System
The Password Retrieval System is designed to make it possible for a user to get their Gaia password even during times when email is unreliable. For the longest time, we have had to put password retrieval as "disabled" for hotmail users. Under the new system, any Gaian will be able to get a password reset by identifying themselves to the system.
The system will ask users for two security queestions. These questions, when used with your email and your username, can be used to identify yourself to the Gaia Online system. In order to help secure accounts from unwanted hacking, we have broken the questions into two tiers. The first question is a more difficult and lesser known item, while the second question is a bit more common knowledge. However, by combining these with username and email, we are able to provide a web-based interface for users to fix their accounts.
However, it doesn't stop there! If you remember from before, a change in email would lock the account, rendering it unusable. This has now been changed as well. Now, changing your email will not lock your account. However, your email in the system will not update until you confirm your account at your new email address. As an added bonus, if you mistype your email in your profile, you can go back in and change it!
Finally, the full system is backwards compatible with existing accounts. Security questions are part of the new user registration process, and are also presented to all users when they log in for the first time (as of about 4 am this morning). If a user has not filled out their security questions, the old "Forgot my Password" will take over.
Quick Questions:
Can I change my security questions / answers?
The short answer is no. This is because to allow someone to change their security questions and answers would allow someone who gets in to your account to compromise your account further. Whenever any changes are made to your account, an email notification is sent to the account owner.

It is highly unlikely that any user on Gaia is going to ask for your email, your mother's maiden name, and your favorite restaurant all at once. We have implemented a new Security Question system to improve the password recovery process. This will eliminate (over time) the need to rely on your email to deliver you a password when you try and update your email. Here are the functional changes:
- First time you log in, you will need to answer your security questions
- Forgot password will now use these questions to authenticate you (along with username and email)
- Changing email will not automatically deactivate you. However, your new email will not take effect until you confirm it.
- Remember your secret questions... you only get to enter them once. Gaia Online cannot retrieve what you enter for these answers.

With the high volume of people trying to get the vials, there are many times when the message could not connect to sushi/cheese/butter database will show up. Wait a minute or two and try refreshing.
When the Debug message shows after clicking Buy, that means the item has already been sold to someone else.

GGN glitches (Oct27)
Captain: It is not possible to make a member the captain of a guild, even when creating a guild. This will be looked in to as soon as able. Members can become captain of a guild with the help of any moderator.
Avatars: The GGN is lagged and not showing updated avatars when you change clothes/pose.
Delete Character (Oct22)
Delete Character is not working for anyone. There is no fix for this.
Sellback not working (Oct21)
Do not try selling things to the store right now. An error will occur and the item will be lost.
Lag is back! (17Oct2004)
With so many people trying the new things, the site is going a bit slow. Please give pages plenty of time to load. Refreshing lots will only add to the problem gonk

Avatar Rewrite in Testing...
... just posted about Avatar 2.0 in the announcements. Sorry it came so late, I just woke up about 2 hours ago and have been working on fixes. It was a long exhausting night... sweatdrop
But anyways, over the next week or so, we'll be working to get rid of all the bugs in the system. I've tried to tweak the system to allow for as many item combinations as possible, especially on the head. I was amazed myself at how many things actually worked out. But of course, there are always bugs, and we'll have to fix those. sweatdrop Major thanks for all the support from you guys, we really couldn't have kept pushing forward without you guys. heart
So, next up, obviously is Halloween. I hope you guys are enjoying the whole G CORP drama as much as we are. domokun

We have just received reports that the mansion of Johnny K. Gambino exploded late last night during his widely touted and hyped Halloween Bash 2k4. Johnny Gambino, also known as Gaia's most powerful man, apparently survived the incident. The following photo was taken as the mansion exploded.
Eye witness accounts describe strange noises coming from the direction of the mansion for the past two days which was then followed by loud sirens. Suddenly, there was a bright flash in the sky, and the mansion vanished in an instant. City officials are still surveying the site, but at this point, it seems that there were no survivors aside from Mr. Gambino himself. Gino Gambino, son of Gambino, is reported missing. We will bring you more news on the situation as we learn more.

A: the candy is not a tradable item. to keep track of which ones that you've picked, check your profile page.
Q: where is jack?
A: jack moves around frequently, on one of the 7 maps. you have to find him to claim your prize.
Q: i got a grab bag, opened it, and tried on the item, but it gives me a red X. what happened?
A: there is a small bug with some of the jack 2k4 items, and it is being resolved as i make this post. if you have a problem, unequip the item, or equip something else, and you'll get your avatar back. it should be working soon.

- My Views on Gaia Online Nowadays --- After the Halloween Party

So, I've been on gaia online for about 1.5 years now. And although the site was amazing at the beginning, there are certain things that I just cannot tolerate anymore. For example, the Halloween event that we just have was total chaos. Biting zombies and humans shooting them, it may seem like a good event, but the amounts of time needed to get an event item now is truly time consuming. I remember the last Halloween when we went and got candy. It was very fun because that was all we did, and we were able to get the event items very quickly. But now, any event items people get are going directly for sale, either in the exchange or in the marketplace. There's nothing wrong with selling your items, but charge unheard of prices is just ridiculous. So overall, I would have to say the Halloween event has been very boring, at least to a veteran gaian like me.
There are several other things that are envoking me to leave gaia. One is the amounts of people hoarding items, and only playing this game for the gold and wealth. Since, I was here at the beginning of gaia, I never did hoarde any huge amounts of items, and those old 03' letters I still have are slowly going away to some of the friends (irl) that joined gaia later than me. As you can see, it is truly hard to find people that like you and not eyeballing your precious items. All the friends I've madeon gaia are really nice and friendly, and I would really like to see them. But all the newbies that are joining now, are just playing for the gold and not the social interactions between individuals, which was what this forum was designed for. The only reason there were items was for a little bump from other online forums, and a form of expression of individualism. Who knew that it would turn into the main focus of the game.
I'm very reluctant to say that I am actually consider of leaving gaia for good. It's not because I have no time to play this wonderful, but getting worse, game. It's because the environment I was so used to in the beginning is slowly diminishing and turning into a mass flea market of sellers and buyers. The final decision has not been made yet, but I am seriously consider just leaving.

Unexpected Development
Dear guests, Bucho, my head of security at G CORP has informed me that our...um...pest problem has grown geometrically. In fact, the problem seems to have grown SEVERELY.
WHAT?! What do you mean 'Silent Flash' protocol?! ONLY A HOUR AND A HALF?!!? Bucho, this is MY MANSION!
We CANNOT do this!!! I commmand you to stop this madness!! DO YOU HEAR ME?! What?! ... G CORP AI computer system automatically enacts 'Silent Flash' protocol when contamination levels reach severe levels?!! ARGH!! ... ahem. NO need to be alarmed my dear guests. Just keep doing your thing. Remember to stay focused on the task at hand, which is pest control... you know, don't go looking out the windows at the sky or anything ok? Good. PARTY ON!!

Dear users,
There is currently a PM in circulation that is warning members not to accept PMs or IMs from some members. At the time this PM was first created, neither member mentioned existed. This PM is false and should be ignored; do not pass it along to other members, and do not post new threads about it here. Any new threads created on this topic in this forum will be recycled.
Simply ignore the PM. You are not in a security risk. In order for someone to send you a virus you would have to accept or download a file from them or from a website.

Captain: It is not possible to make a member the captain of a guild, even when creating a guild. This will be looked in to as soon as able. Members can become captain of a guild with the help of any moderator.

Security Question
We have implemented a new Security Question system to improve the password recovery process. This will eliminate (over time) the need to rely on your email to deliver you a password when you try and update your email. Here are the functional changes:
- First time you log in, you will need to answer your security questions
- Forgot password will now use these questions to authenticate you (along with username and email)
- Changing email will not automatically deactivate you. However, your new email will not take effect until you confirm it.
- Remember your secret questions... you only get to enter them once. Gaia Online cannot retrieve what you enter for these answers.

Big News on FFW
Hello everyone in Gaia. I am not sure if any of you know or not, about FFW.
FFW has been running from Jan 25th to now. And if something didnt happen it's probably never stop. In FFW we give away free fairy wings, free goodies, an assortmant of things. We've given away lots of free gold and items--letters as half-prizes and really kick-a** items for every 3 rounds! We recently his 20000 pages 3nodding and we're all proud of that. 1 round every 2000 pages. But the past few rounds havent been very fun. Regs of FFW havent been very encourging of newcomers to FFW. There have been many fights and regs in FFW have been creating hate lists.
So, I've decided, for to good of FFW, for the good of my friends, to lock up FFW and throw away the key.
No more freebies, no more fun in lotto/games. I cant say i'm not hurt. I am. I started FFW from scratch--people telling me I would reach 3000 pages, people telling me no one would make that many pages... well. We did and we became something great. Well known? I'm not sure but we were great.
But FFW is gone now. Not as punishment to you all but...it's better it be gone.

- Drama of the LabTechs -- Not over yet?

Okay, so we all know the horrible fate that occured to the LabTechs at the Halloween event. But did you know that one of them is still alive?
LabTech 123, who claims to have been buried under a pile of paperwork and has misunderstandings about the internet, convieniently missed Gambino's little Resident Evil-esque ball. Take into account that LabTechX is still alive as well, and this removes all question that the mysterious, shaded LabTech was one of the others that attended the ball, including #247... unless even more drastic speculation can be endorsed.
Now, being the self-proclaimed Paint wizard that I am ( xp ), I thought to take #123's avatar and paste #X's avatar over it.

= exact, pixel-per-pixel match, on the outside lines at least, barring the added pixel or two that result from #X's shadowing. It appears, whoever he is, LabTechX is wearing a mask as well as being cloaked in shadows. Or was that obvious to everyone but me?
Regaurdless, one thing that still bugs me is this: why is LabTechX still around, let alone still selling his Vials at the top of the Marketplace? It's not like they can be of any more use... right? Users don't even need the Vials any more to reverse their zombie condition, they need only change their avatars to rid themselves of the ''infection''.
So why is LabTechX still around, among other things that haven't been resolved? Why are there still mysteries left unsolved, like why #062 and #013 both have wives of the same name, and so on. Are the admins just lazy and not tying up loose ends, and, if so, have they also forgotten about the enigmatic LabTechX? It is also worth mentioning that #123's journal has not been updated for some time; since Oct. 24th.
I am not trying to spread rumors. Nor am I claiming/saying that #123 is LabTechX. I am simply providing a few facts and sharing a few unanswered questions.

Although the fishing game is close to being released, at another corner here I bear the bad news that due to a crash we had lost a significant amount of archived messages dated around the time of July to the end of September. Though every effort is used in an attempt to salvage anything available. Those archived postings will be back on-line in a few days. sweatdrop
We are in the process of installing a drive system that can help us make backups of huge chunks of data. It's a costly system that takes a lot of effort to configure also. This will be quite an undertaking by itself.
Hope we can make up for our mistakes with the many new features to come, including the housing feature that will be released after fishing. Stay tuned!

Ready to kick some serious Bass!
GAIA is getting back to nature to enjoy the primal thrill and struggle of avatar versus fish in the first mini game available on GAIA Online. Test your skills in fishing for the rarest fishes in the world of GAIA. Become a top fisherman by purchasing upgraded fishing poles and master the battles you?ll have to endure to capture creatures that will deem valuable to GAIA markets. As you progress, discover hidden secrets that may lead you to ancient monsters that have spawned fish tales for years.
To begin, make sure to have Flash Player 7 installed and then buy a fishing rod and some bait at the Bass'ken Lake Fishing Store. Once you have those, locate a good fishing spot on the map and start FISHING!

- Regarding Fishing and Site Status

Dear Users,
As you already know, we've just launched fishing. Please keep in mind that there will be bugs associated with launching a game of this magnitude.
For now, we must remind you to be aware that, due to the traffic of the site, you may lose the catches due to errors associated with the flash module connection to our database. We are working very hard to iron out the last remaining bugs so please be patient with us.
However, if you have some extra gold to burn and you want to play, please use the cheapest bait as to minimize the gold lost from any bugs or glitches.

A couple of tips for fishing-
1) If you find that fishing is too hard for Gambino or Durem, you should practice more in Bass'ken Lake. By the time you've mastered Bass'ken, then you'll find the more difficult fishing spots to be easier.
2) Know when to use what kind of bait. If you're just starting out, try to use the cheap bait. Better bait will give you more of a chance at the really rare fishes over time. Better bait does NOT guarantee that you'll only get rare fish. It just raises the chances of you finding them. And if you did find them, you'll have be be skilled enough to actually reel them in successfully. By that same notion, there is still a chance for you to get rare fish by using the cheap bait, just not as much chance as when using the better bait(and that's why expensive bait costs more).
3) Master the basic rod if you can. The basic rod is cheap for a reason. Once you've mastered it, using the other rods will only make your performance better. I know people who can get fishes in Durem using the basic rod. eek
4) Be patient, mastering fishing takes time. Start easy, and work your way up slowly. No one will be a pro overnight. 3nodding
5) Gaia Fishing is not a get-rich-quick game. If you play with the cheapest bait with a standard rod, you'll be making money steadily so long as you exit each game you play with a full bucket(18 fish). The better you get, the harder fish you catch, and the more gold you'll earn. It's as simple as that.

Security Question
We have implemented a new Security Question system to improve the password recovery process. This will eliminate (over time) the need to rely on your email to deliver you a password when you try and update your email. Here are the functional changes:
- First time you log in, you will need to answer your security questions
- Forgot password will now use these questions to authenticate you (along with username and email)
- Changing email will not automatically deactivate you. However, your new email will not take effect until you confirm it.
- Remember your secret questions... you only get to enter them once. Gaia Online cannot retrieve what you enter for these answers.

There have been many reports of items going missing from the Marketplace. Until it can be fixed, it has been turned off.
Page Cannot Be Found (Nov 20)
Frequently pages are unable to be viewed. Refreshing or trying again later usually works. Occasionally, restarting your computer and clearing your cache is the only solution to this. This occurs most often with the profile page on http://www.gaiaonline.com/profile/index.php

- Banning Due To Recent Fishing Store Glitch

Recently there's been an unfortunate event. With the release of Gaia fishing the fishing store had a glitch which allowed a user to gain a very large amount of gold from typing in false data. If no results were taken, the extra gold that was flooded into the economy would make the prices of items sky rocket and ruin Gaia's economy.
As part of Gaia's rules and regulations, anybody who hacked or cheated in any ways will be permanently banned from Gaia Online. This includes the cheaters themselves, and any accounts who received gold from the cheaters in a one way trade. Questionable trades are also being investigated at the moment.
The incident had unfortunately took a lot of engineering time away, and certain updates might need to be prosponed because of it. Cheating hurts the development of Gaia, and it also hurt fellow members by ruining the Gaian economy. We urge all users to please consider the consequences before trying out a glitch or any ways to cheat on Gaia.

Fishing related issues (Nov 20)
Since the release of fishing, there have been a number of reports with problems related to it - gold/item related issues and exploit issues. For gold and item issues, please post them here so the Admins can fix it and prevent it from happening in the future:

Marketplace is turned off (Nov 20)
There have been many reports of items going missing from the Marketplace. Until it can be fixed, it has been turned off.
Page Cannot Be Found (Nov 20)
Frequently pages are unable to be viewed. Refreshing or trying again later usually works. Occasionally, restarting your computer and clearing your cache is the only solution to this. This occurs most often with the profile page on http://www.gaiaonline.com/profile/index.php
Sellback not working (Oct21)
Do not try selling things to the store right now. An error will occur and the item will be lost.

-With the release of fishing many gaians have been wondering whether you can get a profit from it, or whether it is a scam put together by the admins to make 1g worth more. Well personally I was getting tired of reading and answering related questions only to be told to
So I ran a test. These were the conditions I recorded how much gold I had before I bought bait.
Gold at this point: 16903
I bought F bait Gold at this point 16878
I then went fishing in Bass'en Lake, and here is what I caught.

And for those who are mathamaticians here are the percentages.
Boots about 39%
Cans about22%
Yellow guppies about 22%
Orange guppies about 17%
Yes that does add up to 100%
I then went directly to The Ole Fishing hole and sold all the items and my gold then came out to be 16944 now Im probably gonna get replies saying I did some math wrong but w/e. I made this post after recording this. So I made a profit of 26 gold, correct? Therefore this proves that you can and most likely will make a profit while fishing. I made a horrible run sweatdrop
Note: I used basic rod, no upgrade. Also since fishing is random you may very well not make a profit however, I made a horrible run so I am only saying that it is most likely that there is a profit no matter how minimal.
Note: As pointed out if that would of been your first run you would be at a loss since you bought a basic rod, however most people who fish will most likely fish enough to re-emburse the price of the rod, and after that point its most likely to be all profit, now buying an upgrade, more expensive bait etc. could throw this off.
Note:Also the rod loss can be easily be made up by lurking around gaia and doing the basics posting etc.
