If I could just get past my prelude issues, I could get this story going. Why do I have to create such detailed histories for my Sci-Fi stories?

I have no clue. My characters tend to have detailed histories. I have one that has over seven pages of history, and he's just a teenager.

I’m considering taking a page from most of the Sci-Fi anime I watch and starting off with a mind blowing action sequence, then start explaining things a little afterwards. But if I don’t do it right, the reader wouldn’t have a clue what is going on.

I’m unsure of what the balance should be.

50k.. means about 150 double spaced typewritten pages.... at least, on my comp it does. I know that doesn't help much, but handwritten sort of depends on how large you write.
so I guess that I am committing to... uh either 100 or 150, we'll see how the first few days go...
and.. in collusion with my last question: what about editing? if I am in the middle of severely editing something, can I count at least some of those words?? or is it all new?

Also, I know this question is kinda unrelated, but how do you know if you have too many characters?

After reading through the first few pages of last years Summer WriMo I got the idea to make a banner for this year. I’m sorry if I stole the “Ninjas say write” slogan, it just seemed so fitting xd


At the moment it just links to this thread but everyone is free to do with it whatever they will, I’ll be putting it in my signature when I finish my quest. Maybe I’ll make a fancier one at the end of June that says; “One month and still going strong.” Maybe I shouldn’t let myself procrastinate while trying to do my homework. sweatdrop

For me 50K was 76 pages in '04 (times, 12 pt, single spaced), and my '05 is on the other computer, so I can't check.

Hap-You have too many characters when you can't keep them seperate from each other personality, history, or appearance wise.

or for that matter, if your readers can't keep track of them once they've had time to get to know them (a few chapters in)
and all of your pages were single spaced right? otherwise, it sounds much better than it looks on my comp.
