Should we make this some sort of official contest? A guild tried to run a novel writing contest like this once, but then the guild died.

I don't think it should be a contest where people compete against each other. Instead it should be a big glittery goal floating in the writing realms of Gaia. There should be a slogan like, "Summer WriMo... are you hardxcore enough?" We should help each other, not hinder.

I don't like writing contests; someone always gets angry and bitter.

Mmm, but there has to be some recognition to shoot for, otherwise, there's no reason to participate. Still, I agree, aiming for 'let's outcompete one another until we have one uber-writing-Survivor,' probably isn't the best idea. wink

Personally, I'd like it if there was an opportunity for some feedback or concrit, though I understand that if there are a lot of entrants, it would be difficult.

I've never really participated in any writing contests, and I really don't have a lot of ideas to go on right now...

Well, we could just run critique in this thread, or start new threads that say "NaNo" in the titles ... I'd definately help with critique.

Okay, so, from what I understand this is basically flat-out write 50k (or 100k, or 150k, whatever) of a fiction novel, any genre, just like the November version?

Well this sounds sexy! Another 50K challenge?

I should be able to come hang out for that. <Has already made up her mind to do just that> And maybe, actually, participate. Hardcore. XD

I'll check back later, kids. See you all.

I think critiques would be a good idea. However, making new threads for all our novels would most likely just annoy the hell out of the mods, and posting entire novels on Gaia probably isn't the best idea... Still, I think we should post our plotlines and perhaps random snippets here and there, just to keep ourselves updated and give a little sense of competition, even if it's just to say, "argh! must - beat - so-and-so!"

Maybe we could comission a few Shop-owners to design a small award banner or button, that would personalize the experience. Like an "Offical 2005 Gaian Summer NaNoWriMo Participant" for people who are participating or don't finish, and an "Official 2005 Gaian Summer NaNoWriMo Winner" for people who finish to 50K.

The shop-owners could design the button or banner to have the participant's name, novel title, and word count, and maybe a headshot of that participant.

It would mean woring closely with the shop-owners in question and the writers, but it could be neat. (Chances are, someone participating could simply design and create the button/banner, abd that would be even more convenient.)

Just an idea, I suppose.

I like that idea better than slogging through a bunch of hardly-edited novels (since the goal is first quantity). I should be able to get my sister and I to do that for you, as soon as you've decided what you want the awards to say and what you want them to look like.

But still, maybe a month after the "deadline" for the 50k thing we could hold a novella/novel contest because a bunch of people will have a novella/novel type story left to work on after the NANIMO thing is over. A month would give them time to edit and we could put the word limit at something lenient like 30k-70k excerpts. 70k is about 210 pgs in word, double spaced 12pnt font, but we could make it easier on the judges by having a first round where people submit a shorter excerpt of their story, that way if we get 15 entriants the first round but only 5 pass through to the second/final, that's less to read.

But this way we could have a contest but still keep the summer writing goal less formidable. heart

You should call it NaNoWriSe for National Novel Writing Season, since technically summer is not just a single month.

That sounds fantastic.

Honestly, just being able to slap a button thing on my sig would make me happy, I wouldn't give a rat's a** what it looked like.

I kind of like something more like the original name the thread creator had in mind:
Gaian Summer WriMos

Hmn, maybe
Gaian Novel Writing Challenge
?

We should set an end date and a start date. ninja Maybe from the end of this month to the end of august? That's three months.

June 1 - August 31 is nice and neat. X3

I personally really like the button idea, or maybe a balloon or something for our avatars, but I'm wondering if the dhop owners would do it. It seems like it'd take a lot of work to go over everything ... And I honestly don't think it should be a contest. More of a support thing, ya know?

Well, honestly, as for the contest part... if you dislike the idea, don't participate in that part of it. I'd like to, just because with event-type things like that, people are more interested and you tend to get better feedback.

I mean... hell... anyone that manages the 50k in the summer writing part is a winner. We all get a gold star if we try our best *snicker*.
