I'm thinking that at the time, NOA's manual writers had no clue what Samus was. They probably hadn't beaten the game fast enough, and just assumed that the protagonist was a male cyborg. A lot of times there is misinformation in game manuals (I've seen some American Megaman manuals that have used the Japanese Rockman names! O_o).
They translate, and localize. The [original] manual itself is written alongside the game. It's not like the writers have to play it to get their info.

In fact, there was more information about the storyline in the manual then there was in the game.
With almost no text in the game other than what upgrades you have, they've got to fit the story in somewhere.

Anyway, the story/manual writers are in collaberation with the designers, if not the designers themselves.

He's made three nonsense threads already? Damn him and his nonsense.

Erm... you misunderstand what I'm trying to say. I'm trying to say that whoever wrote the manual did not beat Metroid fast enough to see Samus remove her armor, revealing that she is, in fact, a woman. Or perhaps they knew she was a woman, but didn't realize she unmasks herself, and changed "she" to "he" because they figured a game would sell better with a male hero instead of a female.
And do you know for a fact whether or not the Famicom version's manual stated Samus's gender? Things often change in the localization process. Like how the Megaman I (NES) box described the Robot Masters as being cyborgs (when they're not; they're just robots).
wow...I’ve had a crush on a woman all this time...::ponders:: I have to go rethink my living style xp

JUST KIDDING!

Who knows, maybe he is, maybe he isn't. Though I have to say the camel-toe thing is disturbing...I love playing as Link in Soul Calibur and never noticed that. eek
Or, maybe they did that to make the fanboys cry when they found out samus was in fact a woman.

I'm pretty sure I've heard pleanty of stories of fanboys crying when the truth was revealed.

Welcome to Irony. Population: 1.
I don't see how that's ironic. It doesn't mean the opposite of what I'm saying. Samus is a woman. But, I'm thinking of reasons WHY the original English manual referred to her as male.
How did this go from "Link is a guy @$&*it!" to "Samus is IN FACT a girl"

No...no.

Look again.

Zelda manuals call Link a guy. The original Metroid manual called Samus a guy. Call them a guy on the outside, because a male hero will sell better.

You pretty much answered your own question on how Link could be female.

Oh, I see what you're getting at now. xp

The difference is, though, only the manual for the first Metroid game called Samus male. Everything after that has been pretty clear that she is female.
Link, however, has ALWAYS been referred to as male, in manuals AND in games. Link is male.
However... that doesn't mean fanartists can't draw him as a sexy girl. xd

That's because the Legend of Zelda is like super awesome big. So they have to keep it a secret, and can't give it out like Metroid has. They're preparing for a "Super Banana Bofana Manana Bananza!" plot-twister.
