I joined just a little after the Bear Hats were released. I thought they were pretty cute, but I didn't know you could buy/trade items--I thought you actually had to donate to get them.
That left me somewhat disappointed, but I found some communities to haunt. Pre-split Extended Discussion was always entertaining. Chatterbox was scary. I didn't really know where else to go, but I'd gotten my first event (a pink link) and that meant money to burn.
Which was when I discovered the Exchange. I've lurked and participated in other forums, but I've made the Exchange my home.
I remember back in October, the Costume Update. People were spazzing out about the Fairy Wings. Gaia's first "real" back wings. Moonblossom, I recall, earned 40k in just a few days to buy them, because speculation ran that the costume items were going to be discontinued shortly after Halloween. (Obviously, this isn't true, but still, that's what people were worried about.)
October was a good month though, probably one of my favorites. With the Map Update were the Paper Bag Hats. At first, you could sell them on the Exchange for a little over 250 ... but gradually their value plummeted to the point that people were giving them away. They weren't quite the match of the later insanity of Jolly Slippers... but looking back, the two had a lot in common.
First time I actually donated was in October. I'd bought a September Letter on the Exchange, but I wanted to contribute for myself. At first I thought I'd be OK with "buying" a donation from one of those "I'll donate for you" people, but when the October items were released, I knew I had to have them both. So I set out to figure out Paypal, and actually managed to donate my own money before the month was out. I've donated steadily ever since, and hopefully my Tax Return will be in the bank soon enough for a February Donation. xd
