Well, I'm technically a catholic...though I can't stand the church. I stopped giving up stuff for Lent a long time ago; figure I put up with enough crap the rest of the year that I'm not gonna punish myself any further for the next month.

But, if I were to sum up what my Lenten penance was....

Think that sums it up nicely. : p
well im christian and part of being christian is having the self strength and willingness to sacrafice things for others. in this case, im giving up my ability to talk for 40 days for god. man, im not sure i can do it xD

Seems a bit excessive, eh? o_o; Giving up sweets or something seems more doable.

I think the penance focuses more on the "like" aspect over something you need. Besides, I think people are gonna get a bit peeved at trying to figure other ways to communicate with you in public. : p

Several things went
through my mind at
the idea of a Christian
giving up breathing for lent.

First, it was shear terror
at the realization that they
live their life so much for
a deity that this might actually
happen. I believe in living for
deity, not giving my life to it.

Second, was hilarity. I kind of
with I could see it.

Third, is that I'm a bad bad person
for letting myself think the second
bit. I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't try
and love/tolerate the crap out of
Christians.

well actually i dont think they would do it if they were a true christian because that would be a sin. killing youself is a sin, being sad or or very angry is a sin. killing yourself would mean that you do not appreciate gods creations and the life he gave you so yeah, i dont think they would do that. but in some religions they might kill themselves for they're god which kind of scares me. and yeahhh.....suicide isn't joke, sarcasm doesn't really work for me Cx
Well, Christians have been willing
to rape, torture, and kill for their god,
so suicide doesn't seem that far off.

(For references see :The witch hunts,
the Crusades, the KKK, the bastardization
and suppression of foreign religions, etc.)

90% of Christians will tell you that lies
they invented about other cultures and
beliefs are 100% truth. They will tell you
that it's alright that the natives of England
lost almost all of their traditions when
Christians burned their land, tortured and
threatened their people, and openly mocked
them by holding Christian feasts (Christmas,
Easter, and All Hollows Eve) on their holy
days as a challenge. "If we see you paying
homage to your gods on these days, you'll be
arrested and executed."Did you know that
Jesus's supposed birth didn't have an official
date until the Christians conquered the
British Ilse? The Pagans celebrated on that
day for over a thousand years before it became
a "Jesus" day. Did you know that Easter was
originally a holiday associated with the Goddess
Bridget? The Catholics named her a saint when
they couldn't burn her out of the hearts of her
followers.

With all of the horrible things they have done,
and the horrible things that they still do with
their oppression against other faiths, races,
and sexualities, I could see myself amused
at them turning that hate inwards instead of
outwards.

ehh. haha, well im not a strong christian but am i am a strong beleiver in god, so whatever the people of my religion have done its not me who did the doing so im not to worried about that and some people go to the extreme (like the people you mentioned) and a lot of extremists will often sin in the process and those people i don't think are true christians. (refer to the 7 deadly sins here.) shedding innocent blood is a sin, and sinning will not get you into heaven and if they really truly loved god they wouldn't sin. the people who murder, rape or kill for "god" are most likely people that make up stories about things like, "oh an angel came to me and told me to kill so and so." or were probably high and hallucinating things. idk, but say whatever you like but i think those individuals that you mentioned are people who turned their backs on god.

Abstinence from meat on Fridays is not an option if you're Catholic.
So that, and I'm giving up ALL junk food.
Bye bye Coca-cola, my love! T-T
It's not as easy as it sounds, I haven't done it in over eight years.
So this Fat Tuesday I pigged out at the Chinese buffet!!!!

One year I gave up secular music,
    one year alcohol and desert,
another time I prayed a daily Rosary.
