This fan thread is for one of the marvelous, most underappreciated of all the characters in LotR: the Talking Fox who saw three Hobbits wandering along at night and thought it was very strange but didn't find anything else about it.
He is the most intelligent, most well-formed in thought, most magnificent of all of Tolkien's creation, a servent of Eru, true in thought, word and deed, the Einstein of foxes, the King of Mammals, the secret servent of Yavanna, formed in her thought before any other animal was yet made and set to roam. It is immortal like an Elf, changeable like a man, wise like an Ent, sturdy like a Dwarf, majestic like an Eagle. He is humble, designing only to appear in a single scene. But he will come to be appreciated, for is his thread. This thread is dedicated to the Talking Fox of LotR, to elevate it to its true position. Rules. 1. Thou shalt not insult the Fox. Ever. The fox is the true, unsung Hero of LotR even if he is never admitted as such. 2. Thou shalt heap praises on the fox and honor it. 3. Thou shalt not curse and thou shalt obey the Gaia ToS. Come, friends, let us praise the Fox, the unsung hero, now. The Blessed Passage: Three Is Company They set no watch; even Frodo feared no danger yet, for they were still in the heart of the Shire. A few creatures came and looked at them when the fire had died away. A fox passing through the wood on business of his own stopped several minutes and sniffed. 'Hobbits!' he thought. 'Well, what next? I have heard of strange doings in this land, but I have seldom heard of a hobbit sleeping out of doors under a tree. Three of them! There's something mighty queer about this.' He was quite right, but he never found out any more about it. Our Hero heart ![]() ![]() |
