Frodo: "I can't do this, Sam."
Sam: "I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something."
Frodo: "What are we holding onto, Sam?"
Sam: "That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for."

Words cannot express how much I love this quote. I have it memorized. It is completely perfect in every way, shape, and form.

I agree.

Sam was the true hero of the story... Frodo wouldn't have ever made it without Sam.
I'm in total agreement. I wonder what a story line for Sam would have been like. Sam in the Shire kind of stories.. spin offs of adventures created by retelling his adventures maybe? Sam did have children. smile

Genius

Sam would definitely be one of my favorite characters in the story.
Tolkien first portrays Sam as just a garden worker for Frodo and when watching the movie for the first time, I didn't think much of him. But when I heard this quote from him, I realized that Sam was the angel that protected Frodo from the darkness of his journey. (Do remember that Tolkien had a lot of Christian allusions in his books).
I absolutely love Sam and believe that without Sam, Frodo would have been dead and the ring would still rule all.
Sam is the true definition of a friend. Frodo would have never made it to Mordor if it wasn't for Sam.

I personally like the part where Frodo and Sam were talking about how Frodo would become a hero and stories would be told of him, but Frodo says that he would like to hear the story of Sam.
Sam is so precious. The sweetest, most loving character I've ever had the pleasure of reading about.

And lets not forget about how much Frodo did appreciate him. I hear so often from people that Frodo really didn't deserve Sam if he would just throw him away. It's heartbreaking. redface
