So I recently started working as a secretary for a local company. The job is mostly fine and normal. However there is one employee that everyone avoids, shoots dirty looks at, and generally dislikes. After noticing it for a while I asked a coworker about him and she told me he's a felon. He spent 5 years in prison for child pornography. Now he works as the tech guy for our company. Everyone at the company apparently hates him, and want him fired, but management won't get rid of him because doing so would be discrimination, and because they get tax incentives for hiring an ex felon.
Then about a few weeks ago, during lunch, I had my first personal encounter with him. I went out to a picnic table outside to eat, and he was there eating lunch. I wasn't going to eat with him, so I gave a disgusted sigh and turned around, hoping at the least to offend him and maybe to drive him off. Instead he got angry and confronted me. He told me he was sorry his existence offended me, and that I was free to eat, he wasn't contagious.
Eventually I started eating lunch regularly with him, and we got around to talking a bit. I was actually kind of shocked about some of the things I've learned about him, and what he's been through. I have to say, I'm actually kind of shocked.
Apparently yes, he is a genuine *****, and came around to understanding it at a young age, and was caught shortly afterward. Despite the fact that he'd never harmed anyone, never touched anyone, and had never had an issue with the law before, they put him in the same prison as actual murderers, serial killers, gang members, and so on. After a few months the prison administration put him in isolation against his will for the duration of his sentence, simply because the other inmates would've ended up killing him.
He can't vote, and has to go through several processes to get his right to vote back.
He can't own firearms despite the fact that self defense is something he actually needs now.
He's harassed and assaulted regularly. His car is a mess. All the windows of his car are completely broken, and he just puts plastic wrap over them now because fixing them is a waste. He has bricks and rocks thrown through his windows at home regularly. His house is egged/vandalized regularly. His car has spray paint/graffiti all over it.
He has to keep a sign in his front yard that says he is a sex offender. He has to tell his neighbors that he is a sex offender, and the nature of his crime, any time he moves.
He cannot live within 1000 yards of children, he cannot be within 200 yards of children. Because of this he does most of his shopping online, and when he grocery shops, he does so in the middle of the night when the stores are empty.
The police visit his house twice a month to check on him. They also monitor his internet traffic. He isn't allowed to visit sites aimed at children, or have accounts at sites that children frequent. This means he can go to youtube, but might get in trouble depending on the videos he sees, and he cannot make an account. He can't have an account on Steam, and so on. He's not allowed to watch or view porn at all, even if it is between consenting adults. Downloading or visiting sites related to proxies or internet security software is an instant violation and would lose his privilege to even be around a computer, and thus his job.
All in all, it is insane. I mean, I get what he did was gross, and evil, and bad. However he never hurt anyone, and what he deals with is hardly living.
Personally, I think they should make a town out in the middle of nowhere, where people like this can live and work, without having to worry about the rest of society, being harassed constantly, or having the police monitor every breath they take. It's not really fair to expect them to handle so many restrictions in normal society.
What do you think LD? How should we deal with these people? Do you agree they should have their own town? Maybe on an island?
