Welcome to Gaia! ::

I mean it really seems rather worthless.

Valentine's Day doesn't even have some 'special meaning' behind it like christmas does (xmas = birth of christ or family time/happiness).

Valentines was made by companies specifically for merchandising, and then it seems like they slapped on a "Show people you care about them" as an afterthought.
So why do people make this day any more special than others? Why do people get hung up over what will happen that day, if they're single or not, etc.?

You could just as easily make your own day and call it 'crazy tie day' or someday, and it can be the day you randomly gift ties to people while wearing one on your face or something stupid like that.

I'm not single this valentine's day, but I've been single for most of them and to be honest, I've never celebrated the day nor do I care to now. Same with new years. I went to bed early.

So why does everyone get so hung up about valentine's day? Go buy yourself some chocolate if you're so depressed nobody else would get you any. confused
I totally agree...but what would you do if you happened to date someone who wanted to do something on that day?

I thought it was an excuse to get some chocolate and flowers? emotion_donotwant

But seriously... no one I know cares about it.
Maybe it's more of an American thing?

If they wanted to do something I'd want to do it. But for me, it'd still be the same as if they had asked to do something on any other day.

I haven't been single for like a year, Ven. Just because I don't endlessly talk about them doesn't mean they don't exist. SOMETIMES PERSONAL LIVES ARE PERSONAL **GASP!!**

I originally liked Valentines Day because my favourite color is pink. I personally don't care about the gifting part of Valentines Day. I've left that out of my Valentines Days since I was young.

Valentine's Day is just any other day. You are the one who makes the day special. You can leave the celebrating to other people if you want to, but what's so wrong about celebrating love? I chose to make that holiday special. Some people don't, like I don't care for St. Patrick's day.

I don't see anything wrong with celebrating love, whether it's the love you have for a SO, or the love of a friend. If you don't have a SO, spend it with your friends. They still love you, you can still celebrate.

I celebrate the Lupercalia, which the Christians adopted into St Valentine's Day. So for me, it is religious and romantic.

I don't see anything wrong with celebrating it. I guess I should make my point more clear.

I don't understand why people get so worked up over it if they aren't dating somebody, I guess.
Like, have you seen the huge influx of "I'm lonely", "Am I dateable" etc. threads? More than usual, because valentines day is almost here and people are emo they can't celebrate it.
That's the part I don't understand-- why you'd get depressed because you "can't participate".
It's a fake holiday anyway so why do you care? User Image

I figure because it's a giant reminder that they feel alone. Most of them don't realize that they can still celebrate, even without a SO.

VD and Easter are my least favorite holidays. I've developed a revulsion to boiled eggs, and VD is...well, it's boring as ********. Stopped being fun in grade school. The only thing I liked about VD as a kid was handing out Valentine cards of my favorite show and parties.

It's a bullshit holiday, really.
Saint Valentine cares. crying
I don't mind valentines day. It's one day out of the year to show appreciation to your loved ones and friends/family. Sure, you can do that on the other 364 days, but I like how there's a designated day to do that. It's like mother's day or father's day. heart

But what if you don't have friends? lol

I wouldn't celebrate it even if I did have people to share it with. Parties are boring, and I don't want to sit around eating chocolate or each other or whatever it is a group of single women do on VD.

Plus, it's on a Tuesday. I have a programming class on Tuesday. If I'm feeling festive that day, I may watch Cronenberg's Shivers. Or maybe Salo or Nekromantik, if I can find them. Good VD movies, by the way, you might want to check them out.
I completely agree. Valentine's Day is just overrated imo.
