I for one don't want to be a pretentious dyke who feels like she's got to be an attention whore about her sexuality.

I like chicks.

End of story

No social revolution here man.

Good for you. Enjoy continuing to be discriminated against for your sexual orientation.

I discriminate against assholes despite their race, gender, or sexual orientation :'D
I personally think the day of silence has no effect.
I understand the meaning. I just don't think it works.
I participated in it last year, and I wished that I didn't.
I had to wear a sign and whenever somebody saw me and my friend walking, they would eye our signs. >_> I can't believe that she talked me into doing it.

Then I got harrassed by a guy and my friend asking if I was gay or bi. My friend kept nagging me for weeks and I wanted to smack her so hard, even though I told her what I was. URGH.

And day of silence had no effect at all. I'm sorry, but I think that it is just stupid not talking for a day. I don't see how it brings awareness. It pretty much just points out whoever is gay.

I used to participate in high school.
Then I realized how ridiculously counter-productive it is in the real world.

I think its for a good cause but i have to go with this ^

Wow you must of spent a LONG time writing that. Quite frankly I didn't get it..Sorry. But from the first few lines I gather your just trying to explain to my "ignorant" self that Jesus is a fairy tale and the Bible is fiction. Thanks much but your large post filled with words won't even begin to shake my faith in My Lord Jesus Christ and that homosexuality is a sin, which it directly states in the Bible. God bless.

Leviticus 18:22 - "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." (NIV)

Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

Ha, now that the subject has change to religion, like I knew it would, I'd like to point out that this is the thinking that made me change religions. My entire family is christian except for me, I am wiccan. One of the main reasons I am no longer a part of the christian religion is the fact that most Christians I know will say they love everyone and want to do good things, but then turn around and talk down on anyone who doesn't believe the same ideas as them. It's ridiculous! Oh and I'm not talking down on all christians, just the ignorant ones. I have some friends that are christians and accept that I'm a wiccan, but there are random people that will speak down me cause of it. That's a huge part of why I plan to take part in this, because people have no right to talk down on anyone else for any reason. I know I'm going to get someone quoting this with some smart a** remark, and to those people I'd like to say something in advance: F*CK OFF. Thank you. Oh, and can anyone explain how it makes sense that a christian told me last week that they planned to burn a cross in my yard?
It's on my birthday. confused

I hate the Day of Silence, and I'm not straight. It does nothing but make everyone irritated. Be loud, seriously. Tell people why gays deserve equal rights. In my experience, all the day does is make people who couldn't give a crap about gay rights for the whole rest of the year feel smug and superior because they didn't have to answer any questions in math class. And if you're not in high school, who's going to notice? Really.

Gays just need to turn to God and be forgiven for this sin called "Homosexuality". The day of silence sounds ridiculous to me.

"...Self-righteous, judgmental, first to throw a stone,
and using His (God's) name for your own protection."~ 'God Thinks'-Voltaire

Those song lyric seems to work here (there's two lines before that would really suit you here IMHO but I'm being nice). You don't even know the guy yet you're judging him based on his sexualty. I'm sorry, but I don't think being gay is a sin. It's not in the 10 commandments is it? No. So why is it a sin? Why is being gay considered worse/as bad as murder? Besides with the over population of the world, we need a few homosexuals to balance things out.

Anyway, on the original post. I have a few gay friends and they aren't participating because they think that silent protest/awareness isn't helpful. They're more...passive types though, they won't say they're gay unless someone questions them directly (it's pretty obvious with two of them but yeah). And if someone does question them/bash them, they try to explain themselves as coherently as possible without getting insulted or angered. I have a lot of respect for them since they've had to deal with a lot of people thinking they're sinners because they like the same sex. Or people thinking they're horrible disgusting creatures. I think it's really stupid to judge someone based on who they ********]

If you read the Bible its all in there. I suggest you read it yourself biggrin Its really a great book. But yes it most definitely is a sin since the beginning of time. Its nothing new. Jesus Christ would talk with the prostitutes and homosexuals when he was alive and would guide them and talk to them about the sin they were committing and that they should turn away from it. Its becoming "socially" acceptable to be gay in this day and age as we move closer to God's return and its quite sad. Its such a sad and hurtful and hopeless way of life living in sin. All I hope is people begin changing their actions now. May God bless you and your family biggrin

Oh my goodness gracious... This is a frightening post, if ever I saw one.

Where do I begin?

Perhaps with the Bible being "a great book?" If I'm correct in my understanding of the use of the word "great" in that statement, then I feel I have every right to ask the following: ARE YOU INSANE???!?!? <<if not, you have my sincerest apologies>>

If by "great" you meant "bearing a vast influence on the minds, lives, and DEATHS of billions of people throughout history", then you are absolutely correct. Otherwise, I strongly suggest that you rethink your definition of "great", along with the origins and contents of the Bible...

Allow me to enlighten you...

-The "Holy" Bible consists of a collection of sixty-six separate books (Both Old and New Testaments combined.) These books were chosen, after a decent amount of haggling, by the Catholic Council of Carthage in 397 A.D. (a date which is needless to say, over 300 years after the time Jesus was known to have walked the Earth.)

-None of the original manuscripts that the Bible is (allegedly) translated from exist. There is likely not a single book today which survives in anything like it's original form. Let's not mention the countless discrepancies there are between the oldest manuscripts of any one book.

-Many of the authors of the books included in the Bible are unknown, as, where an author has been named, that name has sometimes chosen by pious believers, rather than given by the authors themselves. And--in spite of what the Gospel authors say--biblical scholars are now almost unanimously agreed that none of the Gospel authors was either an actual disciple of Jesus or even an eyewitness to his ministry.

-Many biblical books have the earmarks of fiction. For example, private conversations are often related when no reporter was present. Conversations between God and various individuals are recorded. Prehistoric events are given in great detail. When a story is told by more than one author, there are usually significant differences. Many stories--stories which in their original context are considered even by Christians to be fictional--were borrowed by the biblical authors, adapted for their own purposes, given a historical setting, and then declared to be fact.

Allow me to stop there, as I could go on forever!

So.

Is the Bible, despite all of the aforementioned problems in regard to its validity, TRULY the work of an ever-merciful, all-knowing, and loving God?

It's my personal belief that no, it is not. It is instead, the work of countless men, holding a tremendous influence over the world of their time, seeking to bend the accepted reality to whatsoever they deemed appropriate... Not God (in whom I have a very profound belief in, in ways best not discussed here.)

I find it EXTREMELY unlikely that such a book, while apparently functional for myriad people of many walks of life around the world, having been written BY MEN, holds any credibility (to me at least) when being considered for the sake of what is morally acceptable by God. That includes homosexuality.

But in case you have difficulty stomaching my words here, allow me to take a few from the very book I'm discussing. *ahem* "Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who depends on flesh for his strength
and whose heart turns away from the Lord." Jeremiah 17:5

THESE WORDS MAY VARY DEPENDING ON WHICH VERSION OF THE BIBLE YOU READ...

<<Let the record show that I believe homosexuality is often both behavior and choice, but is not, by any means, EXCLUSIVELY so... As many Christians today would have you believe. Just saying.>>

Wow you must of spent a LONG time writing that. Quite frankly I didn't get it..Sorry. How can you call love a sin? How can you follow such a cruel god- a god that hates those who love.
I personally believe in god, but take into account that Leviticus (and the Bible in general) was written by a human man. We have flaws, and maybe something was lost in the translation.
To me, love is love.
Also, how can you only follow one law of Leviticus? There are so many others that are quite ridiculous. Example:
You can only eat a land animal that has a completely cloven hoof and chews cud Leviticus 11:4
You cannot get a tattoo 19:28
Do not embarrass others 19:17
Not to indulge in familiarities with relatives, such as kissing, embracing, winking, skipping, which may lead to incest (Lev. 18:6)
Not to castrate the male of any species; neither a man, nor a domestic or wild beast, nor a fowl (Lev. 22:24)
There are many more, trust me.
i'm sorry. i have to disagree with a lot of the people who are saying that the 'day of silence' isn't helpful. it all depends on how many people do it, and who does it.

i participate in it almost every year. :] i'm a loud, talkative girl in my school. so, when people see, or, i guess, hear, that i'm not talking, they know something's up. and i carry 'day of silence' cards with me and hand them to my teachers. :]

i got an entire group to do it one time. since my friends are like me as well, a lot of people were wondering what was up with the loud kids being quiet.

it all depends on how hardcore you're into it, and what your personality is, i guess. also, a way to make it work better is making an announcement the day before to your school. i had to speak in front of all my classes the day before.

so, it can get your point across. :/ it all depends on who's doing it.
My boyfriend was almost killed on that day.. Its not a pretty day.
The point of DayofSilence is to try and make people aware of you not talking. It's effective in group instances like schools because it's weird for people to say, refuse to answer a teacher's question. It's even more effective when you wear something that indicates why you are silent. What draws the most attention usually though is the Breaking the Silence event afterwards.

It's kind of a stunt intended to mimic the silence faced by many GLBTQ people who cannot be open about who they are. It is intended to bring to light the silence of these individuals.

Is it effective? In certain places and if done in the right ways.

Does it seem counter-intuitive? Yes.

Does this mean it is non-effective? Not in all instances.

It's especially powerful if the participants are usually quite talkative as was the case with me for the past two years that I have participated, but even then, it was only people who already knew me that knew the implications of my silence before I donned the badge that designated me as a participant.
I won't be participating in the day of silence. I'd rather be productive.
