It's a nice religion once you get past all the lies and hatred and things that make no sense and it being used to control people and the whole thing making no sense.... Okay it's a pretty ******** up religion. But I have met some nice people that simply stay Christian because that's all they know, there are good Christians out there, they do exist! I've been Christian a good portion of my life, I'm not blindly bashing it without knowing what I'm saying, I was tired of following bullshit.

No offense to anyone that might be Christian, not trying to make fun of your god, if you aren't ignorant about your religion and still want to follow it, that's great! If you know nothing about your religion and still got offended by anything I just said, you deserved it!

I respect that.

I'm Catholic, although I've fallen away from it through the years. But I would like to get back into it. My ex is Catholic, but she use to smoke, and drink, still drinks a bit when she's with other people, but she's underage

Thanks. I don't know if I've fallen away from it since I rarely go to a church unless it's for weddings, funerals, baptisms, 15th birthdays, or first communions.

I know a lot of people that were raised Catholic but either strayed from it or converted to something else, or just gave up on it completely. They were all underage.
I attended a Catholic high school.

And it was all about shoving religion down people's throats, even if 80% of the students were already Catholic.

We were forced to attend all-school masses, do ministry, pray during class, take 8 semester courses on Christianity/Catholicism (including 1 World Religions semester that essentially was about how Christianity is superior to other religions, that one was my *favorite* cat_rolleyes ), and attend a Christian retreat. Otherwise, we were not qualified for graduation.

cat_rolleyes

Needless to say, I hated it. They insisted that they were open-minded, especially since they did not discriminate incoming freshmen based on religion, but at that school, you could be expelled for getting an abortion. A personal choice outside of school. cat_rolleyes

I was Lutheran before I entered high school. I graduated as an agnostic, and just gave up all religious thinking during the summer after that. But I like the Quran a lot.

EDIT: My opinion on Catholicism was not changed by my experience at the school. I respect it, but I do not agree with it.

Well through out high school I met people, friends that weren't Catholic, and I stopped believing. I had fun, but was always really depress, but now, since I'm older, those were just people that wanted to chill then but now don't. High school friends, they won't be there for you after you graduate. Then I met my ex who is Catholic, and helped me.

Thinking about it now, I started going to church again, and all that stuff, and I've gotten a lot happier, better myself, more self control. I wasn't happy then, but now I am. More content.

I believe that it's all because of what is online and on tv now that people will fall away from it or give up. I did, but I wasn't happy when I did. It could also be a rebel thing, not listening to adults, and thats why they strayed. But this is all my opinion, weather anyone else reading this agree or not.
I'm not Catholic myself, but I don't think they're a terrible group of people.
Yes they're strict about their lifestyles, but at the same time most people in the world would say they that they are, because "worldly" people have no true understanding of discipline, honor, self-respect, servitude or how to love one another. They're all very center focused, do whatever they want to do with their lives, and then put the blame on God when they wouldn't be in their situation if they had listened to him to begin with.

For instance, can you imagine STDs wouldn't be wide-spread if people only slept with the person they're married to? If people were not encouraged to get married and divorced like it was yesterday's news, just about every child would have both parents to love them. If people didn't party every weekend, they wouldn't be hooked on the alcohol, go to work with a hangover and lose their job.

Some of their ideas might be "out there" compared to what billboards, television advertisements and sit-coms tell us, but Catholics are not wrong. They just see that there's a way to live in obedience and safety, and then there's a way to live hell on Earth before anyone really gets there.
hahaha i have discipline and im not a catholic. Anyways, i have a handful of friends that are catholic, there alright but there parents seem a little stuck up/last gen racist. but i dont really get bothered with it sense im hanging out with friends and not their parents.

At my school they shove beliefs down your throat and they force everyone to take confirmation classes even if they aren't catholic

For some Catholics (I am trying not to generalize the religion), converting people is more important than helping people understand Catholic doctrine. Part of their beliefs is that conversion of non-Catholics is necessary for saving the souls of people outside of Christianity.

It is important that you do not base your opinion about the entire religion on your experiences at the school though. Not all Catholics are like that, and it is wrong to let the religion have a bad rep in your mind simply because you had a crappy Catholic school experience like I did.

And being forced into confirmation does not have to have an effect on you. If you do not believe in it, then it has no meaning. Kinda like how I took the eucharist during the all-school masses that I attended... I did not believe that I was eating the flesh of Jesus at all. I just wanted to cover up bad breath or help keep hunger at bay. cat_rofl The ritual had no meaning or purpose to me. So it did not do its magic on me like Christians believe the eucharist does.

Ah I see. I know exactly how that feels--high school friends aren't going to be there for you unless you make the effort to stay in contact with them and not just let them drift away. I have a few friends from highschool that aren't Catholic but we get along just fine. It's been 4 years but we still talk to each other and hangout when we can.

I do not like going to my church because the father sound like he's reprimanding the audience for something they didn't do. He talks like we've all sinned the same thing and there are little kids that can't even speak and yet he's referring to everyone as sinners. His nagging makes me not want to go to church at all.

It depends on the person's personality. If they are easily swayed, they may change because of what's on TV/internet/media. If they're more stubborn, they may not change so much. I never understood the whole rebelling thing. I never went through that phase :

Ah, Mary. It does seem like they worship her, right? I am not trying to school you or anything, but it sounds like the Catholics are giving you a shitty education about Catholicism.

Mary is "venerated" in Catholic tradition, not worshipped, although it really does seem like she is put on the same pedestal as Jesus and God. She is respected so much because she is supposedly the perfect Christian and a role model for all other Christians. And she is prayed to so much because of how close she was to Jesus... Like... Crap. This is difficult to explain. Sometimes Catholics pray to Mary instead of Jesus/God because they feel like Mary can empathize with them and help them explain themselves to Jesus/God. They feel that she can help them be better Christians with her guidance. Something like that. Because she was chosen specially by God to bear his son, and she was conceived immaculately, blah blah blah. Those things make her special.

I completely agree with you though. They take the Mary thing too far.
i think you're underestimating how many variants and branches of catholicism there is out there, i do know for a fact catholicism is a world of difference between by example latinoamerican countries to Anglo countries.

i was raised in Mexico, catholicism is actually much more loose and relax on views, but i actually just as my family ended developing into Santeria-Catholicism, which has in itself some beliefs of indigenous roots and even some African beliefs brought from the slaves back in the Colony times.

Basically i don't even go to church, i have extremely open views, i don't do confessions because no man or temple should get between me and my god/saints/anything i believe in.

basically, some of you should a little bit more open minded c:
