Dang, that's not good. If it happened recently he should go back and see if he can find anyone who witnessed it. Ask the bar owner to have anyone who was there and comes to him later phone your friend. He should also still have the marks, so that's still not bad evidence.

He took pictures on his phone of his injuries after it happened and he's got really deep scratches down his face and some of them are quite wide and a black eye.
