People were talking about it in the circumcision thread. I'm curious of what other people think of it.

Do you agree or disagree with the idea of homeschooling? Would you want to do it to your own children (if you want or have children)? Why or why not? Were you homeschooled? You do or did you feel about it? If you have any other opinion that relates to homeschooling, don't be afraid to mention it.

I don't think I would want to homeschool my children, but it's not like I can anyway. In my state, you need a teaching license which I think is a good law. (I believe it should be like that in all states.) The better the education, the smarter the student becomes.

Anyway, I agreed with what I read someone else said, that a school can provide social education whereas homeschooling doesn't. My social skills would be crap if I were homeschooled because I'm already a bit below average on social skills to begin with. At school, you can interact with other students, and plus you can learn about society. I mean, school basically represents the town you live in. Luckily, my town is very ethnically diverse, so I got to interact with basically every race. (And I know the way, way majority of Massachusetts is white. My town isn't though.) Plus, there were some blind, deaf, autistic, etc. people at school, so I got to learn about people who are disadvantaged some way.

I'm not gonna home school my kids because I don't want them to miss out on the good and bad of being involved in the real world but if they had one of those home schooling groups I might do that

Homeschooling deprives students of bullies and shitty teachers, both of which teach them extremely important life skills.

I would never homeschool my children.

Personally I'm against homeschooling. Mostly because all the homeschooled students I've met are phycho's because they lack SO much social skill and have no clue how to handle 'real life' issues so to say.

I agree that all states should require a teaching license in order to homeschool your kids. Without it, any idiot who wants to brainwash their child can keep them at home. At least with a teaching degree, we can be mildly sure you're an educated idiot, at the least.

My only problem with homeschooling, other than that, is the lack of socialization you get on a day-to-day basis with children of your own age like you get at school. Sure you can go to social organization specifically for homeschooled children and other such events, but really, it's not quite the same, and, as far as I know, there's nothing that says you HAVE to do this if you homeschool your children, so a lot of homeschooling parents could just completely ignore their children's social needs and we couldn't do anything about it.

yes i would my brother and sister were home schooled last year because my mom felt like they, the school they were in, didn't do their job properly. and there are home school groups where home school kids meet up for classes together weekly if you are worried about social behavior my brother and sister did and to be honest when they went back to school they were ahead of the kids, my sis and bro are in the equivalence to AP course in highschool like i am in but for midle school and elementary school.

it helps because they get one on one attention. my mom followed the A-Beka program which is really good.

but some parents don't know what they are doing and don't do the proper research before they home school and mess up their kids education and make them slip back. those parents shouldn't home school.

I think it all depends on the student, and who teaches them. I have met people on opposite sides of the spectrum. I am personally friends with one. He didn't go to school because he was teased by the other students. He actually is integrating well into college and all the different types of people. On the other hand in the library I work there is a couple with a home schooled child. She avoids eye contact and has been taught that anyone outside her religion is evil. I heard them discussing this while I was shelving books. A teaching certification does sound like a lovely qualification for parent though.

I was homeschooled throughout high school, I've never attended public school.
I always had lots of other social activities going on though, so I never felt like I lacked friends. I'm not socially retarded, most people wouldn't guess that I was homeschooled.

However, if school is your only form of socializing, stay with it. You need opportunities to be with people your own age.



My brother goes to public high school, and hearing about all the sex and drugs and crap that goes on, I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that. Especially knowing that stuff like that goes on in middle schools. Now that I'm in college of course I have to deal with that, but I'm glad I didn't encounter it when I was 11 or 12.



ALSO: the best canidates for homeschooling are people who are self-disciplined and motivated. If you're not good at working on your own or being self-sufficient, it's not gonna work for you.

School is better for socializing with others and teaching giving them a bit of understanding about real life.

So I wouldn't home school my future children.

Actually, you don't really need a teaching license to home school, because everything is online now, so your parents don't actually have to teach you. It's actually a lot harder than normal school though.

Actually, you don't really need a teaching license to home school, because everything is online now, so your parents don't actually have to teach you. It's actually a lot harder than normal school though.

But that is just a form of schooling. Technically, it is a school that you attend. You just attend it online and you do actually have teachers. You just contact them through the internet.
That being said, I have problems with home schooling. It is very easy to mess things up. Like for example I was home schooled for a year. For gym, all I had to do was take a picture next to my bike to show I biked. So, I think it needs to be regulated more and you should be required to meet with a person who follows your education, social skills and so on. I think students should be required to take some type of sport and club through a school group of some sort. And if the option is there- YMCA classes should be utilized. I think think their needs to be clear-cut distinctions of what students need to be learning.

It's already impossible to get people to agree what children should be learning in public schools, much less from homeschooling.
